Dementia Awareness Week

Re-collection Project – a Museum and Health Service Collaboration

15-21 May is the Alzheimer’s Society Dementia Awareness Week.

The Holburne Museum, Bath Preservation Trust and Avon & Wiltshire Mental Health Partnership NHS Trust are currently running an arts project for people experiencing memory problems and their carers. This is the first of two twelve-week projects this year and follows on from two other successful ones in 2014 and ‘15.

The sessions are designed to enable people to enjoy art in a non-clinical setting where they can enjoy viewing and talking about Museum collections (six weeks at the Holburne followed by six at No.1 Royal Crescent) and producing art work relating to what they have seen. An important part of every session is when everyone sits down together for afternoon tea and cakes, served on beautiful vintage china, easing conversation and breaking down barriers. Participants who have never met before share their personal narratives, some prompted by the museum setting.

The sessions are led by artist Paula Tew and arts psychotherapist Rose Pickett of Avon & Wiltshire Mental Health Partnership NHS Trust, supported by Museum staff and volunteers.

This year’s projects have been generously funded by Marcelle Speller, Founder and Chairman of Localgiving.
“Through partnership working we are able to creatively combine our specialist skills and tailor what we offer to people living with a dementia.”
