Peter Randall-Page: Playing God will celebrate the remarkable career of one of Britain’s foremost sculptors, and marks a homecoming to Bath for Randall-Page, who studied sculpture at the Bath Academy of Art between 1973 and 1977.
Extending across the Museum’s first-floor Ballroom and into its historic gardens, the exhibition traces the evolution of Randall-Page’s practice over the past three decades through an ambitious presentation of both new and existing work.
At its heart will be a major new body of sculpture, exhibited publicly for the first time. Collectively titled Playing God, seven life-sized figures cast in iron acknowledge the inherent paradox and arrogance of the artist assuming the role of creator by making human forms. These sculptures will occupy the Ballroom, accompanied by a large-scale screen of Randall-Page’s expressive ink drawings to create an immersive and visually striking installation that reveals the relationship between drawing, making and finished sculpture.
The second part of the exhibition brings together over a dozen sculptures in granite, limestone, marble and bronze that will be installed throughout the Museum’s gardens. Displayed within the landscape, they will encourage visitors to experience sculpture in dialogue with nature while animating the Museum’s grounds with opportunities for discovery and reflection.
“I am so excited by my newest work – seven organic figures in iron – and could not be happier that they will be unveiled at the Holburne close to the place where I first studied sculpture over fifty years ago”
