New works inspired by the Holburne Collection
The Holburne is pleased to present Clare Woods: The Unmutable, a new body of sixteen still life paintings by artist Clare Woods inspired by the Holburne’s vast and eclectic permanent collection.
The exhibition marks Woods’ return to Bath, more than 30 years after graduating from the Bath School of Art.
Woods reinterprets familiar objects through her distinctive and dynamic painting style. Reflecting on the word “unmutable” – that which remains unchanged over time – the exhibition asks what has endured since Sir William Holburne first assembled his collection, and how it continues to inspire more than a century later. In an age of constant image-making and sharing, the exhibition offers a rare invitation to pause and reflect.
“I was delighted when Clare Woods agreed to join our growing programme of contemporary art projects. I have long admired her paintings and I cannot conceive of an artist of these times better suited to reflect upon and respond to our permanent collection and the values it represents.”
