Explore the timeless art of Japanese woodblock printing. Guided by an expert tutor, you’ll craft your own intricate design using traditional techniques, drawing inspiration from our exhibition Beyond Impressionism: Printmaking from Manet to Picasso.

Japanese woodblock printing is one of the earliest forms of printmaking. Despite the humble materials – water-based inks and natural bristle brushes – sophisticated images such as Hokusai’s Wave are celebrated worldwide for their intricate detail and beautiful compositions. Begin the day with a practical introduction to Japanese woodblock printing, then gain historical insight and technical inspiration from a personal guided tour of the exhibition, Beyond Impressionism: Printmaking from Manet to Picasso. The rest of the day you will be taught by  specialist printmaker Wuon-Gean Ho on how to design and carve and print your very own blocks.

Wuon-Gean Ho graduated in both History of Art and Veterinary Medicine from Cambridge, before receiving a scholarship to study Japanese woodblock printmaking in Kyoto Seika University, Japan, under the tutelage of renowned artist, Akira Kurosaki. She later completed an MA in printmaking at the Royal College of Art, and a PhD in printmaking from UWE Bristol. Wuon-Gean has taught workshops around the world, and at leading cultural organisations such the British Museum and the Victoria & Albert Museum in the UK.
