Going Greek

This workshop invites pupils to explore the museum collection and discover artworks inspired by the ancient and classical world. Spot Medusa, Cupid, Satyrs and more!

Pupils will:

  • Learn how ideas and trends from Ancient Greek culture spread across Europe in the 18th and early 19th centuries

  • Discover Greek myths shown in paintings, sculptures, and ceramics that feature gods, goddesses, and mythical creatures

  • Explore these themes through handling replica ancient objects
  • Develop hands on making skills, working in clay to create their own mythological clay creature tile

A Sustainable Georgian

A Sustainable Georgian

This workshop invites pupils to explore the impact of fashion on the environment, using 18th-century society as a starting point. The Georgians were great at making sure nothing went to waste!

Pupils will:-

  • Learn about the trends and fashions of Georgian Bath with an eco-friendly twist!
  • Explore objects in the Holburne collection that showcase examples of Georgian Fashion and learn how the Georgians tried to be sustainable.
  • Learn how to create a playful self-portrait as a Georgian, developing collage skills with sustainable and secondhand materials.

Sensing Sculpture

This workshop offers an introduction to the world of sculpture. What is it? How is it made? And why?!

Pupils will:

  • Explore the museum collection, home to hundreds of examples of sculpture from around the world
  • Develop observational skills through looking and drawing activities
  • Discuss the language and ideas of sculpture through real examples, including handling objects
  • Learn how to create a 3D figurative sculpture, working in wire and modroc

Perfect Portraits

Perfect Portraits

Explore the Holburne’s collection through the eyes of an 18th century portrait artist. What can a painting tell us about a person?

Pupils will:

  • Learn to ‘read’ a portrait. Discover what portraits can tell us about the sitters, the artists, and their times
  • Discover the fashion trends of the time – wigs, patches and more!
  • Develop observational skills through drawing and looking activities
  • Make a truly unique Georgian inspired self-portrait, working in mixed media collage and pencil

Ancient Rome Inspires

Discover the legacies of Roman gods and goddesses in art. Pupils will:-

  • Learn how the classical world and it’s influences spread around the world
  • Explore Roman myths, gods and goddesses depicted in paintings, sculpture and ceramics
  • Learn relief and hand building skills to make a clay plaque representing a Roman god or goddess and their powers
