Discover Museums – Pathways to Volunteering

Places available for February 2024 – Apply now!

Discover Museums – Pathways to Volunteering is a 6 week course to support people who want to develop the confidence, knowledge and skills to become a museum volunteer or simply to get to know museums better.

Over 6 weeks, you will explore the museum, get to know how volunteering works and develop your own creative project – all with the support of your very own trained Museum Mentor. As well as meeting your mentor each week, you will be supported by a Project Artist and will have the opportunity to meet a Curator.

Key dates: Course starts week beginning 12 Feb and ends week beginning 18 March. There will also be a celebration event on the evening of Wednesday 27 March.

This course is for anyone who has experienced mild/moderate mental health issues or social isolation. It is important that participants can commit to a weekly two hour meeting with their mentor for the duration of the course.

Watch a film about Discover Museums.

It’s the first time I’ve ever done anything like this. It’s nice to be part of a team and to have access to people’s knowledge, it’s a fascinating museum” (Discover Museums participant)

‘Having a mentor made it more personal, you become a team, finding common ground and thinking together. This course has really helped me during a dark period. It’s given me a focus, creating a space for me to think about positive things.’(Participant 2019)

Each year, this project (and the people involved) continue to inspire and amaze! Our team of skilled Museum Mentors have worked with over 36 people, some of whom have gone on to volunteer in museums or used the course as a stepping-stone to move forward with their lives.
