Visual artist Joana Vasconcelos is renowned for her monumental sculptures, drawing, film and textiles. She updates the arts & crafts concept to the 21st century and incorporates everyday objects with irony and humour, creating a bridge between domestic environment and public space while questioning the status of women, consumerism society and collective identity. Inspired by our display of seventeenth-century embroidery Joana will discuss that, in spite of the notion of needlework as a domestic pastime rather than artistic endeavour, it has an enduring legacy in contemporary art.
