Lubaina Himid – Lost Threads Batik Textile Workshop
Available 19 Jan – 21 Apr 2024 2.5 hours £160 (for up to 16 pupils)
This workshop will combine a guided tour of Lubaina Himid’s Lost Threads installation with a hands-on batik workshop. ‘Weaving and flowing across the front façade and around the permanent collections, Lost Threads sees 400m of vibrant Dutch wax fabric pieces transform the spaces of the Holburne Museum’. Although now recognised as ‘African’ cloth, these textiles have a complex identity that reflects a historic and continuing flow of female labour, colonial trade, migration and globalisation.
Pupils will:-
- Learn about the connections between Dutch traders, Indonesia and West African markets before designing and creating their own batik squares designs.
- Each student will create a unique coloured batik piece to take away.
The workshop will be lead by Shelagh Hetreed, ‘Shelagh has taught and shared batik techniques in Zimbabwe and Senegal. She has a weekly Batik and screen printing group at her own studio and exhibits with the Cam Valley Arts Trail’
