A Georgian Day Out – Loans Boxes

Bring the museum experience to you!

This resource has been developed by The Holburne Museum in Bath with funding from Art Fund (Respond & Reimagine Grant). The aim is to share the collection of objects with a wider audience and rethink how children can engage with historical objects and artworks to promote and encourage curiosity and creativity.

Each A Georgian Day Out Loans Box is suitable for a class of up to 32 pupils of all ages, but is particularly aimed at pupils in primary KS1/KS2 education. Each Loans Box contains:-

  • Beautiful handling objects – each Loans Box is designed to represent a 6 different locations and activities in 18th century Bath, creating the ideal ‘Georgian Day Out’. The Loans Box can be used to highlight particular stops/themes or can be used across several lessons to explore a range of topics. These include:-
    • Getting ready with William Holburne, Cavendish Crescent                          (Georgian self care and beauty)
    • Investigate a Roman Discovery, Sydney Gardens                                            (Roman discoveries in Bath)
    • Dance at a Georgian Ball, The Assembly Rooms                                               (Georgian games and dancing)
    • Go shopping at Wedgwood, Milsom Street                                                         (Wedgwood: Maker turned abolitionist)
    • Explore the Pleasure Gardens, Sydney Gardens                                                (18th century entertainments)
    • Have your silhouette made at William Hamlet’s studio, Union street          (Hamlet: Enslavement to artist)
  • A ‘match the object label’ game, designed to get pupils looking and thinking about the objects and their stories. (Teacher cheat sheet included)
  • Access to an exciting A Georgian Day Out – Creative Activities designed to inspire and get pupils making!

  • Teacher Briefing sheet – A Georgian Day Out a selection of ideas and themes to aid your lesson planning and help you make the most of this resources.

Loans Box Fees:            

  • £20.00 – Hire for 1 week (one week minimum)
  • £25.00 per week – Additional weeks loan time (up to a maximum of 3 additional weeks)
  • £10.00 per day – Failure to return the loan box on the agreed return date

Schools will be invoiced when booking of loan box is confirmed.

Receiving and returning your loans box:

The loan box is loaned for a minimum period of 1 week and a maximum period of 4 weeks. Schools/organisations local to BANES can collect the loans box on a pre-arranged date and time agreed with the Holburne Learning Team.

UK wide courier delivery can be arranged in agreement with the Holburne Learning Team. This is dependent on availability. The Loans Box must be returned on the pre-arranged date and time to avoid incurring further fees.
