DESCRIPTION:Join us for a special evening in partnership with EMERGE Studios\, showcasing Soft Rebellion: Reframing Craft in the Gallery Space: Unpicking the Margins Between Textile Tradition and Fine Art Mastery \n  \nCurated by Emerge Studio residents Lily Serendipity and Lola Bennett\, Soft Rebellion is a bold new exhibition that invites visitors to question where craft ends and fine art begins. \nThis exhibition introduces a radical softness – one threaded through embroidery\, quilting\, weaving\, and textile sculpture\, engaging in a tactile dialogue with the Holburne’s permanent collection. Drawing on heritage crafts traditionally seen as domestic or decorative\, Soft Rebellion repositions contemporary textile art as a site of conceptual depth\, cultural commentary\, and creative rebellion. \nEMERGE is a creative incubator\, designed to help emerging talent through giving vital space\, training\, and meaningful support at a pivotal time within an artist’s career pathway\, bridging the gap between university and the professional world. \nSashiko Stitching Workshop (5.15pm  – Booking Required / limited space) \nSashiko is a Japanese stitching technique used to mend\, reinforce\, and embellish fabric. In this free workshop\, led by experienced artist and teacher Wendy Thomas\, you will learn the basics of Sashiko stitching and take home your own Sashiko-stitched fabric patch. The word sashiko translates to “little stabs\,” referring to the stitching technique.\nBook Here \nHandbound Brush Making Workshop (6.45pm  – Booking Required / limited space)\nLed by experienced brush maker Ian Parkes\, this free workshop allows participants to craft a handbound brush made from natural fibre and cotton yarn. DESCRIPTION:This summer\, the Holburne is partnering with The Museum of Colour\, a digital museum celebrating the achievements of people in colour in the arts\, to present a temporary display. \n  \nKeeping it Real will share portraits of writers: three at the Holburne Museum and three at the Victoria Art Gallery\, from 12 July to 17 September\, to highlight the importance of non-fiction. \nThe Holburne’s three portraits are created by artist Naomi Shewa\, a multidisciplinary designer who blends creativity and professional expertise in various mediums including architecture\, art\, visual\, graphic and web design. Her portraits are of: \nRon Ramdin: a Trinidad-born historian\, novelist\, and biographer whose work has significantly contributed to understanding the experiences of Black and Asian communities in Britain and the Caribbean. \nOttobah Quobna Cugoano: a powerful voice in the eighteenth-century Britain’s Black abolitionist movement and the first published African to demand the total abolition of slavery. \nDadabhai Naoroji: a pioneering Indian intellectual\, political leader and economic thinker who spent over three decades in Britain agitating for India’s independence. \nThe project is being delivered alongside the Victoria Art Gallery\, Fairfield House\, Black Families Education Support Group (Black Supplementary School)\, Words of Colour\, Bath Preservation Trust\, People’s Palace Project\, Queen Mary University London and is funded by Arts Council England and the Paul Hamlyn Foundation. \nImage credits: Dadabhai Naoroji\, Ottobah Quobna Cugoano and Ron Ramdin by Naomi Shewa\, courtesy of the artist

DESCRIPTION:Join us as we delve deeper into the practice of new emerging artists from Emerge Studios. \nHolburne Curator Ben Sharp hosts this fascinating conversation with two emerging artists\, whose work touches on queer themes. Through the conversation we will find out more about the practice of new emerging talent\, more about their work and their place in the art landscape. \nWe are excited to welcome: \nAsh Manganaro  \nManganaro is a spoken word artist\, writing around themes of identity\, bilingual experience and everyday nuances. They were the winner of Diva magazine’s 2024 lesbian visibility week poetry competition\, in March 2025 they supported artist’s Alice & Peter Oswald and Dizraeli at the Bath Pilgrimage 4 Palestine\, recently their poetry was featured on BBC Upload. Throughout their residency at Emerge they were given the space to explore zines and short form writing\, producing a collection of poetry postcards. \nAshley Cerrino\nAshley is a multi-disciplinary artist\, experimenting with different media that spark the imagination. Ashley says: “As an active taxidermist I work to preserve the beauty of life\, revitalising a dying artform through embalming and pinning. After developing my own practice\, I have gone on to run workshops that communicate these skills to others. Additionally\, I work within Bath as a photographer\, giving back to the local community and helping to connect fragmented networks. I also organise and direct LGBTQ+ events in Bath\, allowing local queer artists to reach an audience close to home.” \nEmerge is a studio residency programme for Bath Spa University graduates across art\, design\, performance\, music and creative media. \nEMERGE launched in the Autumn of 2020 in partnership with Santander Universities. It’s a unique multidisciplinary creative practice studio for Bath Spa University alumni who have graduated within the last two years. \nThis event is FREE and is part of Holburne Pride and Queer Bath \nSupported by Emerge Studios

DESCRIPTION:As part of Queer Bath\, FilmBath and the Holburne Museum present a special screening of Derek Jarman’s Sebastiane—a visually arresting and profoundly poetic reimagining of the life of St Sebastian. \nJarman’s Sebastiane (1976) was groundbreaking in its open and unapologetic depiction of homoeroticism\, marking one of the first positive cinematic representations of gay sexuality. Told entirely in Latin\, the film reinterprets the Christian martyr as a queer icon\, exploring themes of desire\, devotion\, and resistance. \nAt the Holburne Museum\, St Sebastian is already present in the collection\, standing as a powerful symbol of suffering\, resilience\, and queer identity. For centuries\, the saint’s pierced and bound form has been reimagined through an LGBTQIA+ lens—his image reclaimed as an emblem of defiance\, beauty\, and desire. \nThis screening offers a unique opportunity to experience Sebastiane in dialogue with the museum’s collection\, exploring the connections between art\, queerness\, and historical narratives of martyrdom and desire. The screening will include an introduction looking at  Jarman’s legacy\, queer visual culture\, and St Sebastian’s enduring place in LGBTQIA+ history with Holburne Curator Hannah Mills  \nThe Museum and Cafe will be open from 6pm and the film will start at 7pm

DESCRIPTION:Join us for an evening recital in the Picture Gallery with acclaimed pianist Helen Reid\, featuring works by Clara Schumann\, Chopin\, Schubert and Rachmaninov. Helen first came to public attention when she appeared in the National Keyboard Finals of the BBC Young Musician competition.
