SUMMARY:Teatime Talk - Jane Austen: The Secret Radical with Helena Kelly
DESCRIPTION:Almost everything we think we know about Jane Austen is wrong\, according to the author Helena Kelly. Instead\, she introduces the reader to a passionate woman living in an age of revolution; who used her writing to grapple with the weightiest of subjects – feminism\, slavery\, abuse\, the power of the Church\, even evolution – at a time when to write about such things directly was seen as akin to treason. Uncovering a radical\, spirited and politically engaged Austen\, Jane Austen\, The Secret Radical will encourage you to read Jane\, all over again.

SUMMARY:Dreams of the everyday: paintings by Winifred Nicholson & Andrew Cranston
DESCRIPTION:This compelling exhibition arrives in the south\, having opened at The Pier in Orkney in June. It brings together the paintings of Winifred Nicholson (1893–1981) and Andrew Cranston (b. 1969)\, curated by the designer and collector Jonathan Anderson\, in collaboration with Andrew Cranston and the gallerist Richard Ingleby. \n  \nThe display explores the connections and contrasts in paintings by Nicholson and Cranston\, many of which share a delight in ordinary\, often domestic\, realities – drawing on daily-life\, memory and imagination\, and incorporating figures\, interiors and glimpses of nature. Both artists’ practices are at once rooted in the real world\, while going beyond conventionality and the commonplace to evoke a sense of non-physical\, sometimes mystical\, and occasionally visionary\, realities. \nThe two painters\, though distanced by time and place\, are connected by their commitment to a kind of painting that values intimacy over showmanship. The earliest and most recent works in the exhibition are separated by a century – and whilst Nicholson often travelled from her base at Bankshead in Cumbria to paint in Cornwall\, Paris\, Greece\, and on the west coast of Scotland – Cranston\, originally from Hawick\, has resolutely remained living and working in Glasgow. Despite such disparity in circumstances\, and their distinctly different voices\, their works sit well in each other’s company\, and in presenting their paintings together\, the exhibition seeks to reveal something new about both. \n  \nImage credit: Winifred Nicholson\, Kate and Jake\, Isle of Wight\, 1932 © Trustees of Winifred Nicholson\, Courtesy Bristol Museums

SUMMARY:Sculpting the Earth: Ceramics by Natalie Bevan\, Psiche Hughes & Ann Stokes
DESCRIPTION:Sculpting the Earth brings together the ceramic works of three little-known women artists of the 20th century: Natalie Bevan\, Psiche Hughes and Ann Stokes. \nThe ceramic art of all three artists finds echoes in the charming\, figurative output of 18th-century porcelain factories such as Meissen and Bow\, examples of which are held in the Holburne’s own collection. The exhibition highlights an alternative ceramic tradition that challenges established hierarchies of art and craft. \nThough her work was rarely exhibited publicly\, Ann Stokes (1922-2014) was a well-known presence in a particular circle of the London art world. Her works included vibrant plates and cups intended for use\, as well as stand-alone\, figurative pieces. \nNatalie Bevan (1909–2007)\, whose clay figures include circus elephants\, mythological scenes and domestic subjects\, had just one solo exhibition in her lifetime – at the Anthony d’Offay Gallery in 1967. Otherwise\, her practice was sustained in private and known largely through her friends and family. \nPsiche Hughes’ (1939-2018) ceramic practice saw her produce vibrant\, figurative works focused on representational imagery – animals\, fruits and vegetables\, buildings. Her work\, like that of Bevan and Stokes\, lies outside the bounds of formal art education\, and yet belongs to a clear tradition of humorous ceramic sculpture in the modern period. \nTogether these three artists demonstrate an intuitive approach to modelling\, produceing forms that are humorous and insightful reflections of the external world they saw or imagined. \n  \nImage credit: Psiche Hughes\, 'Pelican'

SUMMARY:Royal School of Needlework Partnership Class - Silk Shaded Floral Wreath
DESCRIPTION:*Booking for this event has now closed. We programme several workshop with The Royal School of Needlework throughout the year\, please keep an eye out for future events* \nJoin us on Friday 12 September to create a beautiful Silk Shaded Floral Wreath design. During the day you will also have an opportunity to view some of the museum’s magnificent embroidered objects and visit their upcoming exhibition\, Illustrating Austen which celebrates the 250th anniversary year of Jane Austen’s birth. \nHand embroidery appealed to the Georgians as both a skill and a hobby just as it does today.  Join RSN Tutor\, Sarah Smith to stitch this colourful design inspired by late summer walks through cornfields. Poppies\, wheat and cornflowers (one of Jane Austen’s favourite flowers) intertwine to create a gentle circle and are completed in a range of well-known and more unusual stitches in silk threads on pale grey linen. \nThe class will develop your skill in silk shading whilst introducing you to a range of familiar and less familiar surface embroidery stitches. The stitches covered are: Split Stitch; French Knots; Wheat Ear Stitch; Stem Stitch; Detached Chain Stitch; Silk Shading; Padded Satin Stitch; Pistil Stitch and Trellis Stitch. The design is worked in pure silk Soie d’Alger from Au Ver A Soie on the highest quality light grey Belgian linen. \nYour kit and all materials and necessary equipment are included in the cost of the class. You may like to bring your own embroidery scissors and magnifiers if you need them\, but you will be able to borrow ring frames and scissors on the day. All aspects of the design will be covered during the class and a full instruction booklet will be included in the kit to enable you to complete the design at home. \nThis event takes place during the annual Jane Austen Festival in Bath. To mark the 250th anniversary year of Jane Austen’s birth\, the Holburne Museum will be staging a new exhibition\, Illustrating Austen (11 Sept 2025-11 Jan 2026) giving audiences the chance to see the artwork behind their favourite Austen novels. You will be able to visit this exciting exhibition during the day. \nJane Austen and her family lived nearby the Museum at No 4 Sydney Place from October 1801 to the summer of 1804. She also attended activities in Sydney Gardens\, just behind the Holburne grounds\, when they were operating as pleasure gardens in the 1800s. \nThis event includes entrance to the exhibition\, You will be able to visit the exhibition at lunchtime and after the class until the museum closes at 5pm. \nJoining Instructions: \nRegistration commences at 9.45am. The class will be held in the Museum’s Clore Learning space\, situated on the ground floor. This space can be accessed from 9.45am via large white door\, on the right hand side of the building. \nFood and drink (other than bottled water) may not be consumed  in the classroom\, but you may bring a packed lunch to eat in the workshop space or museum gardens. There is also an onsite café for refreshments. \nThe museum is fully accessible. Free parking is available to Blue Badge holders in the car park\, which is located directly next to the museum.

SUMMARY:Illustrating Austen
DESCRIPTION:In the 250th anniversary year of Jane Austen’s birth\, the Holburne is delighted to present Illustrating Austen\, a chance for audiences to see the artwork behind their favourite Austen novels. \nCentring around Austen’s stories and the characters she created\, Illustrating Austen demonstrates how our favourite characters came to life on the page\, how different artists depicted them in a range of styles\, and how they have evolved through the years\, reflecting changing times and new audiences. \nAusten resided just across the road from the Holburne Museum at 4 Sydney Place (from 1801-1804)\, and Bath had a profound effect on her work\, particularly in her social commentary on the city in Persuasion and Northanger Abbey. It was not until after her death in 1817 that interest in her work truly began to grow\, and not until 1894 that the first complete illustrated edition of a Jane Austen novel was published\, the famous ‘Peacock Edition’ of Pride and Prejudice by Hugh Thomson. From this point onward\, Austen’s characters came to live visually on the page\, and with each new illustrated edition of Austen’s work\, her characters were interpreted differently\, reflecting the styles of the artists who brought them to life and the time period in which the edition was produced. \nThis concise exhibition features illustrations\, illustrated editions\, original sketchbooks\, printing blocks\, and complete works\, now considered works of art in their own right. It brings together\, for the first time\, some of the earliest illustrations of familiar characters with their modern iterations\, taking us on a journey from the nineteenth century through to the current work of Coralie Bickford-Smith for Penguin cloth-bound classics. \n  \nImage credit: Alone (Marianne Dashwood from Sense & Sensibility)\, William Cubitt Cooke\, Wash Drawing\, 1892\, © The Holburne Museum.
