SUMMARY:Movie at the Museum: A Cock and Bull Story (Film -2005)
DESCRIPTION:From Austen to Bridgerton\, Bath has long been the centre of the period drama aesthetic but how does the representation on screen affect our view of the reality? Michael Winterbottom takes on the period drama in film-within-a-film\, A Cock and Bull Story. \nNow 20 years old\, A Cock and Bull Story is a fantastic look at the process of making a good period drama\, it’s funny\, smart and utterly absurd. This screening is taking place as part of the Holburne monthly ‘Up Late’ events\, so explore the collections\, take a stroll through the grounds\, and then sit down for a chaotic trip into a post-modern look at the 18th century. \nIndependent Spirit of Bath welcomes you to the Holburne Museum with one of their delectable drinks from the era. \nTickets: £12/10

SUMMARY:Movie at the Museum: A Cock and Bull Story (2005)
DESCRIPTION:Collections will be open from 17:00 as part of the Holburne Museum Up Late and the film screening will start at 19:00. \nFrom Austen to Bridgerton\, Bath has long been the centre of the period drama aesthetic but how does the representation on screen affect our view of the reality? \nTickets: £12/10 \nView trailer here

SUMMARY:Adult Screen Print Workshop – Iconic Portraiture
DESCRIPTION:Adult Screen Print Workshop – Iconic Portraiture \n\nFriday 7 March | 10am-4pm | £85 pp \n\nThis day-long workshop will take you on a deep dive into screen printing\, led by artist and printmaker Emma Gregory. Artists such as Andy Warhol and Richard Hamilton combined screen-printed photographic elements with paint to create some of their most acclaimed works. You will screen print in colour\, layering up loose and vibrant backgrounds for a stencil based on your own photograph. Expect to go home with a series of printed ‘portraits’ ready to frame. \n*Ticket includes all materials and museum entry

SUMMARY:From Gainsborough’s Salon: The London Obbligato Collective
DESCRIPTION:Join a musical evening inspired by the painter Thomas Gainsborough (1727–1788)\, surrounded by his works in our splendid Picture Gallery. \n  \nGainsborough was an avid amateur musician known for hosting musical gatherings. The programme includes works by Johann Christian Bach (1735–1782)\, Carl Friedrich Abel (1723–1787); and Italians Felice Giardini (1716– 1796) and Valentino Nicolai (fl. 1775–1798). \nLondon Obbligato Collective is a period-instrument chamber ensemble launched by harpsichordist Masumi Yamamoto in 2023 to give the harpsichord a place to shine\, enhanced by the richness of the accompanying instruments. The ensemble is made up of musicians who regularly play with the major period-instrument ensembles including the Gabrieli Consort & Players\, the Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment\, and the Academy of Ancient Music. \nForming part of a small tour in London\, Hampshire and Devon\, this promises to be a very special evening at the Museum. \n* Pay bar available from 6.30pm before the concert starts

SUMMARY:Diedrick Brackens: Woven Stories
DESCRIPTION:We were pleased to present the first exhibition in the UK by Diedrick Brackens (b. 1989\, Texas\, US) in spring 2025.  \nBorn in Texas in 1989\, his hand-crafted works employ techniques from West African weaving\, quilting from the American South and European tapestry-making to create works that explore American history\, African American and queer identity\, allegory and narrative. \nBeginning his process through the hand-dying of cotton\, a material he deliberately uses in acknowledgement of its brutal history\, Brackens presents rich\, nuanced visions of African American life and identity\, while also alluding to the complicated histories of labour and migration. Often depicting moments of male tenderness\, Brackens draws on African and African American literature\, poetry and folklore as source. \nContinuing our commitment to the display of craftwork of various media\, Brackens’s rich imagery speaks powerfully to our history and the stories behind many of the works in our collection as well as echoing\, visually\, our holdings of 18th century silhouettes. \n  \nDiedrick Brackens\, prodigal\, 2023 © Diedrick Brackens. SUMMARY:Iconic: Portraiture from Francis Bacon to Andy Warhol
DESCRIPTION:Featuring major names of 20th century art including Francis Bacon\, Peter Blake\, Pauline Boty\, Richard Hamilton\, Gerhard Richter and Andy Warhol\, Iconic: Portraiture from Francis Bacon to Andy Warhol brings rarely-seen works together to explore the ways artists are inspired by photography. \n  \nThe exhibition focuses on the period in the mid 20th century\, particularly the 1960s\, when many artists began to use photographs as sources for paintings. Often\, the photographs were not simply appropriated as tools in picture making but were themselves the subject matter\, resulting in paintings that are about imagery and the mediation of such images. The exhibition also reflects on the potency of the media and the construction of celebrity. Many artists used photos of celebrities as the basis of their works\, and several illustrate a degree of nostalgia\, even for the very recent past. \nChris Stephens\, Director of the Museum\, says: “The term ‘Pop Art’ was coined in London in 1949 by the critic Lawrence Alloway\, referencing artists’ use of photographic sources. We are thrilled to explore the development of portraiture from that moment and cannot wait to see the dialogue between them and the Holburne’s collection of paintings that depict the social elite and celebrities of their time.” \nThe exhibition is supported by King Edward’s School \n \nPortrait of David Hockney in a Hollywood Spanish Interior\, 1965\, Peter Blake. © Peter Blake. SUMMARY:Joshua Donkor: I have more souls than one
DESCRIPTION:The Holburne is pleased to present a display of recent works by Joshua Donkor (b. 1997\, UK)\, a Ghanian-British painter who grew up in Bath. \n  \nHis work is deeply personal\, using portraiture to reflect family history\, identities and experiences\, exploring how feelings of belonging and estrangement play out through different generations. \nDonkor approaches portraiture as a collaborative exercise between him and his sitters. He works with the subjects of his paintings to identify objects and images that convey their personal narrative\, including family photos\, fabrics and personal belongings. \nUsing a range of different painting and printing techniques\, he literally embeds the histories of his sitters into the work\, combining their image with layered visual references to the items they picked out together. The images are built up with glimpses of the figure’s homes and families: two crucial elements that inform identity. The resulting works are complex representations of multiple generations\, time periods and memories that have informed the past\, and continue to influence the future. \nJoshua Donkor said: “Exhibiting this body of work at the Holburne Museum feels like a real full-circle moment for me. I grew up in Bath\, so my first exposure to art was in places like the Holburne\, as a child I even attended workshops there with my mum. To think that I will now have the opportunity to share my own paintings and stories in this space is incredibly special for me and my family. I hope my paintings will resonate with people of all ages and backgrounds in telling their stories of family history and help inspire a new generation of young storytellers.” \n  \nImage credit: Worlds Apart\, Joshua Donkor\, 2023.
