SUMMARY:The New Schroder Gallery
DESCRIPTION:Our new gallery on the lower ground floor is now open \nThe new space takes inspiration from the great treasury displays of the past\, presenting one of the finest private collections of Renaissance silverware\, paintings\, bronzes\, maiolica and gems from the Schroder family collection. \nThe display of over 100 pieces of silver includes masterpieces such as The Schwarzenberg Nef (a large silver ship); a rare Mechanical Celestial Globe\, and The Aldobrandini Tazza (one of a set of twelve dishes once described as ‘one of the most spectacular groups of 16th century silver’). The display also includes a number of works in bronze\, masterpieces of 16th century Italian maiolica\, and important paintings from the first half of the 16th century\, including works by artists such as Lucas Cranach the Elder and Hans Holbein the Elder. \n \nEntrance to the gallery is included in General Admission tickets – members go free.

SUMMARY:Powder and Presence: Pastel Portraits in the Eighteenth Century
DESCRIPTION:This autumn\, the Holburne is delighted to unveil Powder and Presence: Pastel Portraits in the Eighteenth Century\, a new temporary collection display on the 2nd floor. \n  \nIn the 1700s\, pastel rose in popularity as a favoured medium for both professional and amateur artists. Through Venetian and French influence\, British artists embraced pastel for its soft and silky texture – ideally suited to capture the delicate nuances of skin and textiles in portraiture. \nOur new display includes portraits by eighteenth-century pastelists from the Holburne’s own collection. Alongside leading European artists\, such as Jean-Étienne Liotard and Anna Tonelli\, are Bathonian portraitists William Hoare and his son Prince Hoare\, as well as the celebrated draughtsman Thomas Lawrence. Unlike oil\, pastel’s immediacy made it ideal for quick commissions from Bath’s many visitors\, as it required no drying time and a portrait could be completed\, framed\, and ready to take home within hours. \nImage credit: Unknown lady (called Mary Robinson) with a singing child\, John Russell (1745 – 1806)\, 1793. DESCRIPTION:The Holburne Museum is delighted to present Zandra Rhodes: A Life in Print\, a vibrant celebration of one of Britain’s most influential fashion designers. This dazzling exhibition brings together a spectacular selection of Dame Zandra Rhodes’ screen-printed garments from the 1960s\, 70s and 80s\, shown as complete ensembles on vintage Adel Rootstein mannequins. \n  \nKnown for her fearless use of colour\, signature prints and sculptural silhouettes\, Dame Zandra Rhodes has redefined the role of print in fashion for more than six decades. This exhibition explores the stories behind some of her most iconic designs\, arranged into themed ‘hero print’ sections that reveal how Rhodes translated her motifs into unforgettable garments. \nThis exhibition brings together key garments from the Zandra Rhodes Foundation archive\, an extraordinary collection of over 6\,000 pieces\, selected in close collaboration with Curator Rosemary Harden and Foundation Director Piers Atkinson. \nVisitors can also enjoy an audio tour narrated by Zandra Rhodes herself\, sharing the stories\, inspirations and memories behind her most iconic prints\, from travel sketches to cultural influences and famous wearers.

It reflects the museum’s commitment to championing practices in which care is embedded in every interaction — with our visitors\, the artists and groups we collaborate with\, and the volunteers and staff who support our work.\n\nThis exhibition has been created in collaboration with the Gardener’s Lodge Art Group\, IMAGE Group\, Happy Mondays\, artists\, facilitators\, volunteers and staff from Pathways to Wellbeing.

DESCRIPTION:As legendary photographer Sir Don McCullin turns 90\, the Holburne is proud to present Broken Beauty\, a rich selection of images drawn from across McCullin’s career: from London to Vietnam\, Northern Ireland to Cyprus\, scenes of violence and suffering offset by still-lives and landscapes from the Middle East\, Southeast Asia\, and his home in Somerset. \n  \nSir Don McCullin is one of the most influential photographers of the last sixty years\, renowned for his powerful black-and-white images documenting conflict\, humanitarian crises\, poverty and post-war Britain. Alongside these defining works\, McCullin has created equally compelling landscapes\, portraits and still-lifes\, all characterised by an extraordinary sensitivity and depth. \nAt the heart of Broken Beauty is a remarkable collection of McCullin’s latest photographs of ancient Roman statues. Never before shown in the UK\, they offer visitors a rare opportunity to experience a new and contemplative side of McCullin’s practice. \nAs well as being one of the greatest photographers of our time\, Don has life-long connections to this part of the world. DESCRIPTION:The Holburne is delighted to present Glenn Brown in Bath: Arrows of Desire\, an exhibition of paintings by Glenn Brown (b. 1966 Hexham\, Northumberland)\, one of the most celebrated painters to emerge from the generation of Young British Artists. \n  \nA selection of Brown’s recent and dramatic works will be hung amongst the renowned English and Dutch paintings of the museum’s permanent collection\, as well as smaller drawings in antique frames in adjoining galleries\,  seeing Brown bring his own twist to the Holburne. \nArrows of Desire is one aspect of a double presentation by Brown across two Bath museums\, with Glenn Brown in Bath: Grottoesque at No. 1 Royal Crescent\, from 22 May. SUMMARY:Beyond Impressionism: Printmaking from Manet to Picasso
DESCRIPTION:The Holburne is delighted to present Beyond Impressionism: Printmaking from Manet to Picasso\, an exhibition celebrating the resurgence of printmaking from the mid-19th century onwards. \nTaking a broad view of Impressionism and Post-Impressionism\, the exhibition spans the reappraisal of the artform in the 1850s through to the 1930s. Bringing together prints by key artists of the movement including Édouard Manet\, Pierre Bonnard\, Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec\, and Pablo Picasso\, among others\, the exhibition explores how these artists\, primarily known for their paintings\, made remarkable contributions to the medium of printmaking. \nHarking back to their artistic predecessors such as Rembrandt and Goya\, many of the leading painters of the 19th-century returned to the medium of printmaking\, once again elevating its status as a form of artistic expression in its own right. Looking beyond the work of a single artist\, the exhibition reveals the far-reaching influence of the movement\, bringing together scenes from country life through to the centres of the metropolis of London and Paris. \nAmong the earliest proponents in the resurgence of printmaking during the period\, Édouard Manet led the way for his contemporaries as a key member of the Société des Aquafortistes\, founded in 1862 to promote etching as an equally prestigious medium comparable with painting and drawing. Key examples of his experiments with the medium will be displayed\, including his delicate portrait of Berthe Morisot (1872) and an etching of his well-known painting Olympia (1865). \nExploring the commercial side of printmaking\, the exhibition highlights the key role played by printers\, publishers and dealers of the period\, such as Félix Bracquemond and Ambroise Vollard. Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec’s colour lithographs will further demonstrate the commercial application of printmaking during this period\, with his promotional images of Parisian nightlife\, such as Irish and American Bar\, Rue Royale (1896) and his famous poster of the Moulin Rouge – La Goulue (1891). \nBeyond the trappings of urban life\, the exhibition also spotlights how artists used printmaking to depict scenes of domestic and rural life. Key examples of this can be seen in Vincent van Gogh’s Gardener by an apple tree (1883)\, Paul Cézanne’s Entrée de ferme\, rue Rémy\, Auvers (1873) and Berthe Morisot’s etching of herself drawing with her daughter (1889). \nExploring the technical considerations of printmaking\, the exhibition reveals how artists experimented with a wide range of processes – including those taken from Japanese printmakers\, whose work had a profound influence on the Post-Impressionists – works by artists including Camille Pissarro and James McNeill Whistler will be shown alongside a selection of works by Japanese printmakers including Utagawa Hiroshige’s  Sudden Shower over Shin-ōhashi Bridge and Atake (1857). \nDirector of the Holburne\, Chris Stephens\, said: “We’re beyond excited to be bringing such a range of major artists to the Holburne. The paintings of the Impressionists are so familiar\, we seem to forget that the same generation of artists\, and their successors\, radically changed printmaking as well. DESCRIPTION:Part of Queer Bath 2026\nPresented by Spark Creative \nThe clothes we wear can say a lot about who we are as people. Throughout history\, clothes have been used to express political views\, gender and sexuality\, defiance of convention\, and to spark joy in dark times. From Philippe I\, Duke of Orléans and  \nChevalière d’Éon to Marlene Dietrich and British forces in WW2 join Holburne curator Hannah N Mills and explore Rebel Threads.  \nBio  \nHannah N Mills (she/her) is currently an assistant curator at the Holburne in Bath. Where she has worked on a range of exhibitions\, including Illustrating Austen\, which traces the evolution of book illustration from the 19th century to the modern day\, and Zandra Rhodes: A Life in Print\, a vibrant celebration of Zandra Rhodes’ iconic ‘Hero Prints’ and her remarkable creative legacy. With over 15 years’ experience in the museum sector\, she has worked for the Fashion Museum and the National Portrait Gallery. \n She is currently working on her PhD in Fine Art\, History of Art\, and Cultural Studies at the University of Leeds\, exploring the development of Artistic Communities in 19th-century London and the role of the artist’s house as a commercial space. She has lectured for the De Morgan Foundation\, the Victoria & Albert Museum\, Oxford University\, University of Leeds and Bath Spa. Hannah holds an MA from UCL in History of Art (2018) and a BA Joint Hons from Bath Spa University in History and Heritage (2017).  \n As a dedicated follower of fashion\, Hannah is often spotted wearing anything from Victorian waistcoats to 1930s A-line dresses\, embodying her passion for dress history in her personal style. \n@sparkcreativebath  \n@historyhannah22

DESCRIPTION:Part of Queer Bath 2026 \nFashion has always been about more than clothes. It can signal identity\, belonging and resistance. Yet the history of lesbian style has often been overlooked or erased. \nJoin historian and writer Eleanor Medhurst for an in conversation event exploring her acclaimed book Unsuitable: A History of Lesbian Fashion. Drawing on figures such as Anne Lister and tracing stories from Sappho and the Suffragettes to butch and femme bar culture and contemporary queer style\, Medhurst uncovers a rich history of coded dress\, defiance and self-expression. \nUnsuitable restores lesbian fashion to the centre of cultural history\, recognising the diversity of Black lesbian style\, trans lesbian histories and gender nonconformity across centuries. \nWhile Unsuitable painstakingly traces the style aspect\, it also examines the reasons lesbian fashion has been lost to history. While homophobia against women is nothing new\, Medhurst underscores how it even permeates the fashion world.’ — Vogue \nThe event will take the form of a live conversation\, followed by an audience Q&A. Expect insight\, honesty and a fresh way of looking at fashion as a powerful archive of lesbian life. \n  \nAbout the author \nEleanor Medhurst is a historian of queer fashion and culture and author of the blog Dressing Dykes. She has worked on Brighton Museum’s exhibitions Queer Looks and Queer the Pier\, and is pursuing a PhD in lesbian craft history at the University of Brighton.

DESCRIPTION:Join us for a panel discussion and the launch of comic\, ‘Disability\, Queerness and me: An exploration of sexual experiences.’  The event will share findings from a co-produced research project led by We Are The People\, Bath Spa University and Queer Out Loud CIC\, which explored experiences of sexual expression among queer disabled people living within the South West. The comic was designed by artist\, Jua OK! \nThe panel will consist of the researchers on the project: Dr Nina Worthington\, Dr Stuart Read\, and Mimi Jones (Co-director of Queer Out Loud CIC). Panel representation may be subject to change. \nIt is free to attend this panel discussion\, and no prior understanding of disability is required.

Eliot Prize 2021 and the Polari Prize 2022 in conversation with Manganaro about her books C+NTO and its recent sequel Maryville \nJoelle Taylor is the author of four collections of poetry and one novel. Her most recent collection C+NTO & Othered Poems won the 2021 T.S. Eliot Prize\, and the 2022 Polari Book Prize for LGBT authors. C+NTO is currently being adapted both for theatre\, and into a television screenplay. She is a co-curator and host of Out-Spoken Live at the Southbank Centre and tours her work nationally and internationally in a diverse range of venues\, from Australia to Brazil. She is a Poetry Fellow of the University of East Anglia and the curator of the Koestler Awards 2023 and has judged several poetry and literary prizes. Her novel The Night Alphabet was published in Spring of 2024 and was named both a Spectator and Guardian Book of the Year. She is a Fellow of the Royal Society of Literature\, and the 2022 Saboteur Spoken Word Artist of the Year. Taylor was recently honoured with a DIVA Award for Excellence and named as number 15 in the Independent’s 2024 Pride Power list
