SUMMARY:Royal School of Needlework - Partnership Embroidery Class inspired by Zandra Rhodes: A Life in Print       Fully Booked
DESCRIPTION:Saturday 18th April\, 10am – 4pm\n£185* price includes museum entry and all bespoke materials kit.\nYou will be able to visit the exhibition at lunchtime and after the class until the museum closes at 5pm.\n\n\n\n\n\nJoin us at the Holburne Museum to create an eye-catching canvas and beadwork hand embroidery design inspired by Zandra Rhodes: A Life in Print\, an exhibition showcasing a spectacular array of Dame Zandra Rhodes’ vibrant screen-printed garments from the 1960s\, 70s and 80s. During the day you will be treated to an expert-led viewing of the exhibition and see the original dress from her ‘Secrets of the Nile’ Collection (Spring/Summer 1987). \nStudents will be introduced to the hand embroidery techniques of Canvas work and Beadwork. You will spend the morning creating a background of stitches using different coloured stranded cotton and metallic thread\, focusing on Tent Stitch\, Florentine Stitch and Vertical Milanese Stitch. In the afternoon session you’ll move on to richly embellish their work using a selection of beads\, threads and sequins. \nAll materials will be provided\, as will a fully illustrated instruction booklet and scissors and frames to use for the day. It may be useful for students to bring their own sewing kits if they prefer and any aids to magnification and light that they may wish to use. The finished design size will be approximately 9.5 cm x 5 cm. All aspects of the design will be covered during the class and a full instruction booklet will be included in the kit to enable you to complete the design at home. \n  \nZandra Rhodes: A Life in Print \nWithin the Holburne’s historic Ballroom\, this vivid staging celebrates Rhodes as a trailblazer in colour and screen-printed textile design\, who completely redefined the role of print in fashion. It highlights Rhodes’ mastery in working with print as a structural influence on garment shape and her skill in harnessing print and colour make garments sing with life on the body. \nThe display of vintage mannequins\, generously loaned by Fashion Museum Bath\, will take visitors on a journey through Rhodes’ most iconic prints and the inventive ways she has transformed them into garments. \nAfter earning an MA in Printed Textiles from the Royal College of Art in 1964\, Rhodes broke new ground as one of the first designers to marry the craft of screen-printing with fashion design\, launching a distinctive career that has spanned 6 decades and continues to evolve today. Establishing her eponymous label in 1969\, she has screen-printed and designed over 100 fashion collections. Her bold garments have dressed rockstars and royalty\, including Freddie Mercury and Diana\, Princess of Wales\, and in 2003 she founded London’s Fashion and Textile Museum. \n\n\n\n

SUMMARY:The Stories Inside Things (Creative Writing Workshop)
DESCRIPTION:A creative writing workshop exploring personal histories through objects\, portraits and memory \nAuthors have long used the everyday objects found in portraits – a necklace\, a book\, a carefully held glove – as keys to hidden lives. In this warm and welcoming workshop\, we’ll take a fresh look at the Holburne’s portraits and explore how novelists such as Hilary Mantel draw out untold stories from painted objects. You’ll then be invited to turn that way of looking towards an object of your own\, and explore the stories it holds. There’s no pressure to share\, and no “right” way to write. \nTaking place the day before Mother’s Day\, this workshop can be an experience enjoyed with a family member or friend\, or a chance to do something playful and curious in the company of welcoming strangers. Your writing doesn’t need to be about motherhood or family unless you choose it to be. \nWhat to expect: \n\nA short introduction to how contemporary novelists use objects in portraits to imagine hidden stories\nA wander through the Holburne’s portrait collection\, focusing on painted objects that catch your eye\nA series of gentle\, guided creative writing exercises\nTime to create a bespoke postcard featuring your words and an image of your chosen object\, to keep as a memento or give as a gift\n\n What to bring:\nParticipants are invited to bring a small object that holds personal meaning\, and a pen and notebook if you like. Don’t worry if you forget – we’ll have everything you need. \nAbout the facilitator: \nDr Joanne Rush is a novelist\, a poet and a researcher. \nWebsite: Joannerush.co.uk \nCredit: Artist Grace Duncan @grace_duncan__\nPhotographer Ashley Cerrino @ashley_cerrino

This lecture will look at the story of art in tandem with the evolution of Hollywood. \n  \nEver since the dawn of the sound era\, Hollywood studios have been producing spectacular feature films about the lives and achievements of the great visual artists\, with a cast of characters including Charles Laughton as Rembrandt\, Kirk Douglas as van Gogh\, Charlton Heston as Michelangelo and Salma Hayek as Frida Kahlo. The results – usually dismissed out of hand by art historians and curators – can tell us a surprising amount about the changing public image of the artist and about how art has entered the cultural bloodstream of modern Western societies. If you knew nothing about art history except these Hollywood films – what would you know…? \nSir Christopher Frayling takes us behind the scenes of Tinseltown’s history of art\, in all its fascinating glory…

Resonating with this ethos\, the Holburne Future Collective has collaborated with Hamblin to reimagine this installation\, in partnership with the Bath ReBalance Wellbeing Festival. \nApproximately 100 unique handmade lanterns will be laid by you across the front lawn of the Holburne\, transforming the museum into a sea of light. Originally made during a collaborative student-led workshop at Bath Spa University’s Locksbrook campus\, the lanterns serve as a reminder that light can always be found.

SUMMARY:ReBalance Bath Kintsugi Workshop - 2pm - SOLD OUT
DESCRIPTION:Learn how to mend once loved china with the ‘golden repair’ in the ancient craft of Kintsugi. \nJOIN DOTTY BY DESIGN AT THE HOLBURNE FOR KINTSUGI \nRefresh\, rebalance and reset: at Bath’s reBalance Festival of Wellbeing. \nDotty has partnered with Bath’s Holburne Museum to run a Kintsugi Workshop. \nRebalance and relax in the fabulous Museum gallery space\, learning about this mindful and ancient craft. Mend a piece of china in this practical workshop. \nWHAT’S IT ALL ABOUT? \nKintsugi\, the Japanese art of embracing your imperfections. Learn how to mend once loved china and earthenware in this mindful introduction to the Kintsugi method. The visible repairs are seen as part of the history of an object\, highlighting the cracks and symbolising fragility\, strength and beauty. This golden repair is called Kintsugi. \nWHAT HAPPENS IN THIS WORKSHOP? \nRepair and join together the fractures using the Japanese Kintsugi method – applying the resin glue\, and liquid gold to the broken sections\, making it whole once more. The imperfections aren’t to be hidden but embraced! The Kintsugi method celebrates the beauty of the scars in an object and recognises that the history should be shown and not hidden. Choose your broken porcelain (vase\, bowl\, plate or cup)\, and be taken by Claire\, step by step through the technique of mending each section piece by piece. This is very much a thoughtful and methodical process….not to be rushed\, where each piece is applied and repaired carefully. \nTHE ALL IMPORTANT DETAILS \nWe will provide all the kit needed for this workshop: broken china pieces to work on included along with all the other materials. You can bring your own china but we can’t guarantee it’ll be finished on time as the process needs to be done with patience. The class will run for approx. 90 mins at The Holburne Museum in Bath.

SUMMARY:Cold Plunge at the Holburne
DESCRIPTION:At sunrise on 1 February 2026\, the Holburne Museum will host a powerful and symbolic Cold Plunge Event in partnership with IceBreakers and the ReBalance Bath Festival of Wellbeing. Members of IceBreakers will take a dawn dip in the museum’s historic grounds to spotlight the growing movement around cold-water immersion and its benefits for mental and physical wellbeing. The event will then open to members of the public who wish to take a cold plunge on a Sunday morning. \n  \nBefore the Cold Plunge you will join Arron Collins Thomas in a breathwork and Qigong workshop staring at 8.15am in the surround of the Brownsword Picture Gallery before braving our ice baths. \nThe event marks a unique collaboration between three Bath-based organisations committed to improving community wellbeing through creativity\, connection\, and accessible self‑care practices. \nPlease note that all participants will be asked to sign a waiver in advance of the plunge.  \nAll patricipants must be over 18 years of age  \nThere will be a sunrise Cold Plunge at 7.45am which is exclusive to men taking part in IceBreakers \nFurther information: \nA Shared Mission for Wellbeing \nThe Holburne Museum & Pathways to Wellbeing \nAs a charity\, the Holburne Museum leads Pathways to Wellbeing\, a nationally recognised museum-based engagement programme that uses art\, creativity\, and heritage to support young people and adults with lived experience of mental health challenges and social isolation. The programme delivers measurable improvements in confidence\, connection\, and wellbeing\, placing creativity at the heart of recovery and resilience. \nHosting the Cold Plunge at sunrise reflects the Holburne’s commitment to opening its spaces to the community in meaningful\, restorative ways. \n  \nIceBreakers: “We Dip as One” \nIceBreakers was founded by men who had experienced the devastating impact of poor mental health\, including the loss of friends to suicide\, and who recognised the urgent need for accessible\, stigma‑free support for men. \nTheir approach is simple\, natural\, and powerful: \ncold water\, community\, and nature. \nNot therapy—yet therapeutic. \nNot clinical—yet deeply supportive. \nA space where men can show up exactly as they are\, without pressure to talk unless they choose to. \nIceBreakers has developed The IceBreakers Way\, an evolving methodology that enables men to safely access the benefits of cold water immersion without the barriers of equipment\, training\, or cost. Their vision is to grow a global network of local chapters—groups of men supporting men\, freely and openly. \nThe sunrise plunge at the Holburne will shine a light on this grassroots movement and the growing evidence behind cold water immersion as a tool for improving mental health\, resilience\, and emotional regulation. \n  \nReBalance Festival: Bath’s Annual Celebration of Wellbeing \nThe Cold Plunge forms part of the ReBalance Bath Festival of Wellbeing\, an annual city-wide programme that positions Bath as a leading UK wellbeing hub. Running in late January and early February\, the festival encourages residents and visitors to explore new practices that support mental\, physical\, and spiritual health—from yoga in historic venues to mindful craft workshops\, spa experiences\, and talks from leading wellbeing voices\, including Joe Wicks in 2026. \nThe Cold Plunge event embodies the festival’s ethos: accessible\, community-led activities that inspire people to try something new during the winter months. \n
