SUMMARY:Emerging Artists in Conversation
DESCRIPTION:Join us as we delve deeper into the practice of new emerging artists from Emerge Studios. \nHolburne Curator Ben Sharp hosts this fascinating conversation with two emerging artists\, whose work touches on queer themes. Through the conversation we will find out more about the practice of new emerging talent\, more about their work and their place in the art landscape. \nWe are excited to welcome: \nAsh Manganaro \nManganaro is a spoken word artist\, writing around themes of identity\, bilingual experience and everyday nuances. They were the winner of Diva magazine’s 2024 lesbian visibility week poetry competition\, in March 2025 they supported artist’s Alice & Peter Oswald and Dizraeli at the Bath Pilgrimage 4 Palestine\, recently their poetry was featured on BBC Upload. Throughout their residency at Emerge they were given the space to explore zines and short form writing\, producing a collection of poetry postcards. \nAshley Cerrino\nAshley is a multi-disciplinary artist\, experimenting with different media that spark the imagination. Ashley says: “As an active taxidermist I work to preserve the beauty of life\, revitalising a dying artform through embalming and pinning. After developing my own practice\, I have gone on to run workshops that communicate these skills to others. Additionally\, I work within Bath as a photographer\, giving back to the local community and helping to connect fragmented networks. I also organise and direct LGBTQ+ events in Bath\, allowing local queer artists to reach an audience close to home.” \nEmerge is a studio residency programme for Bath Spa University graduates across art\, design\, performance\, music and creative media. \nEMERGE launched in the Autumn of 2020 in partnership with Santander Universities. It’s a unique multidisciplinary creative practice studio for Bath Spa University alumni who have graduated within the last two years. \nThis event is FREE and is part of Holburne Pride and Queer Bath \nSupported by Emerge Studios

SUMMARY:Queer Bath film screening: Sebastiane (18)
DESCRIPTION:As part of Queer Bath\, FilmBath and the Holburne Museum present a special screening of Derek Jarman’s Sebastiane—a visually arresting and profoundly poetic reimagining of the life of St Sebastian. \nJarman’s Sebastiane (1976) was groundbreaking in its open and unapologetic depiction of homoeroticism\, marking one of the first positive cinematic representations of gay sexuality. Told entirely in Latin\, the film reinterprets the Christian martyr as a queer icon\, exploring themes of desire\, devotion\, and resistance. \nAt the Holburne Museum\, St Sebastian is already present in the collection\, standing as a powerful symbol of suffering\, resilience\, and queer identity. For centuries\, the saint’s pierced and bound form has been reimagined through an LGBTQIA+ lens—his image reclaimed as an emblem of defiance\, beauty\, and desire. \nThis screening offers a unique opportunity to experience Sebastiane in dialogue with the museum’s collection\, exploring the connections between art\, queerness\, and historical narratives of martyrdom and desire. The screening will include an introduction looking at  Jarman’s legacy\, queer visual culture\, and St Sebastian’s enduring place in LGBTQIA+ history with Holburne Curator Hannah Mills \nThe Museum and Cafe will be open from 6pm and the film will start at 7pm

SUMMARY:Queer Bath 2025
DESCRIPTION:A Citywide Celebration of LGBTQ+ Arts\, Culture & Heritage \nThe rich tapestry of LGBTQ+ lives\, stories and creativity in Bath will be celebrated during five weeks of activity in a citywide campaign — the first of its kind — as iconic venues and cultural institutions join forces for Queer Bath 2025. \nRunning from 26 May to 30 June\, Queer Bath is supported by a growing coalition of Bath’s leading heritage sites\, museums and creative organisations. The initiative brings together events and fresh interpretations of collections — all rooted in authenticity\, research and co-creation with LGBTQ+ communities. \nThe campaign emerged from the success of Holburne Pride in 2024\, devised by the Holburne Future Collective\, the museum’s young adult volunteers with support from Bath Arts Collective. Since then\, the vision has been developed collaboratively by the Holburne\, Bath Arts Collective and Nik Jovčić-Sas and Remy Melee from WIG! (Bath’s queer cabaret)\, working together to shape the programme and partnerships that underpin Queer Bath. \nProgramme highlights include: \n\nRainbow Family Community Day at the American Museum & Gardens on 26 May\, celebrating its LGBTQ+ heritage\, with pay-what-you-can entry\n‘Queer Georgians’ talk by Dr Tim Moore from National Trust’s Bath Assembly Rooms at BRLSI on 2 June\, exploring LGBTQ+ narratives from the Georgian era\nAndrew Foyle’s talk on the Stonewall Uprising at the American Museum & Gardens on 3 June\, reflecting on the American origins of Pride and the museum’s queer heritage\nThe Pride NOT Prejudice Ball by WIG!\, a spectacular drag cabaret celebrating Jane Austen’s 250th birthday\, taking over the historic Roman Baths & Pump Room on 6 June\nQueer Bath Comedy Night at The Roman Baths on 11 June\, featuring Catherine Bohart and Andrew White\nEileen Gray and the House by the Sea at the Museum of Bath Architecture on 18 June\, a film screening and discussion exploring the legacy of queer modernist architect Eileen Gray\nSebastiane at the Holburne Museum on 19 June\, a powerful screening of Derek Jarman’s queer reimagining of St Sebastian\, introduced by Holburne curator Hannah Mills\nHolburne Pride Up Late and Pride Party on 27 June\, featuring live drag performances\, creative workshops\, a queer artist panel\, and access to exhibitions\n\nIn addition to events\, venues are also exploring their own collections\, archives and histories to uncover hidden queer stories — identifying artists\, historians\, writers and intellectuals who may have been LGBTQ+ or had queer-coded histories\, and sharing these findings through trails\, talks\, exhibitions\, and digital content: \n\nThe Holburne Museum will present a Queer Holburne Trail and Bloomberg App experience\, linking objects on display and in storage through queer thBath Royal Literary and Scientific Institution (BRLSI) will showcase hidden queer stories in science\, literature and thought through a digital campaign\nThe American Museum & Gardens will highlight its LGBTQ+ heritage exploring the story of the museum’s founding and wider queer histories in American art and culture\nBeckford’s Tower will investigate William Beckford’s role in LGBTQIA+ heritage\, while also examining the complexities of his personal life and relationship with William Courtenay\nThe Museum of Bath Architecture is beginning research into queer-coded architectural design and spaces in Bath\, aiming to uncover contributions from LGBTQ+ designers and makers\nThe Roman Baths will have a temporary co-curation display in the Kings Lounge of the Pump Room\, showcasing objects that have been chosen by members of staff exploring their personal LGBTQ+ identities through the museum collection.\n\n“We are proud that Queer Bath originated from our young adult volunteers\, The Holburne Future Collective. Creating a safe\, inclusive\, and welcoming space when we open our doors is central to Holburne’s mission. Uncovering new narratives to enhance our stories and engage with diverse audiences is essential to our work. Supporting our young volunteers as they make such positive changes — not just in our Museum but throughout our city — is truly exciting.”\n— Spencer Hancock\, Head of Operations\, The Holburne Museum \n“Queer Bath is one of the most exciting and ambitious cultural projects I’ve ever seen in this city! It celebrates the gorgeous Georgian splendour we know and love while uncovering hidden histories and weaving in a fierce\, fabulous queer twist — Bath as you’ve never seen it before.”\n\n— Nik Jovčić-Sas\, Director and Host\, WIG! \n“At Bath Arts Collective\, we’re thrilled to be coordinating and helping to produce and market Queer Bath. This initiative is about more than just events — it’s about transforming how Bath’s museums and heritage spaces engage with LGBTQ+ arts\, culture\, and history. Through Queer Bath\, we’re helping to uncover hidden queer narratives\, making these spaces more welcoming\, and proving that Bath can be a living\, diverse\, and vibrant city.”\n— Jasmine Barker\, Co-director\, Bath Arts Collective \nParticipating organisations include:\nThe Holburne Museum\, The American Museum & Gardens\, Bath Royal Literary and Scientific Institution (BRLSI)\, Bath Assembly Rooms\, The Roman Baths & Pump Room (Bath & North East Somerset Council)\, Bath Preservation Trust (Beckford’s Tower and the Museum of Bath Architecture). \nThank you to partners Bath Arts Collective\,WIG!\, Clearly PR\, FilmBath and Fez Comedy Club. \nInformation and tickets for Queer Bath events are available via Bath Arts Collective: www.queerbath.co.uk

SUMMARY:Impressions in Watercolour: Turner and his Contemporaries
DESCRIPTION:In the 250th anniversary year since his birth\, this is a rare opportunity to see some of Turner’s finest watercolours from a private collection.\n\nThe exhibition showcases Turner at his most experimental and gestural. The selection of works also place him among notable contemporaries including Thomas Girtin and John Sell Cotman\, to highlight the era of exciting developments in watercolour in which they worked. The collection of works encapsulates the transition towards looser\, plein-air sketching\, in which new directions\, materials and techniques were being explored\, building an impetus that validated watercolour as an expressive and serious medium.\n\n\n\nThis exhibition is generously supported by: \n           \nVan and Eva DuBose \n  \n          \n\n\nDavid Posnett OBE\n  \n  \nJ M W Turner\, 'A Low Sun'\, c.1835-40\, watercolour and bodycolour on buff paper\, IA23. SUMMARY:Nicolas Party: Copper & Dust
DESCRIPTION:Our new installation brings together recent works by Nicolas Party. Born in Switzerland in 1980\, Party is well-known for his soft pastel works\, site-specific murals and immersive installations. The latter are influenced by his early work as a graffiti artist\, his training in graphic design and 3D animation\, and his love of 18th century pastels – examples of which feature in our collection. \n  \nWithin the exhibition\, Party’s intimate oil on copper works comprising landscapes\, still-lifes and portraits are shown in two intimate cabinet galleries. \nIn the Picture Gallery\, he has created a large-scale mural responding to one of the works in our collection: A Brawl between Peasants by Benjamin Gerritsz. Cuyp (1612–1652). Party became interested in the work following extensive research into the Holburne’s collection after visiting in 2023. The mural will remain on display until 19 October. \nThis exhibition is generously supported by: \n           \n \n \nWith additional support from: \nThe Holburne Contemporary Circle \n  \nNicolas Party\, Landscape\, 2025\, oil on copper\, NPS-2320.
