SUMMARY:Edouard Vuillard The Poetry of the Everyday
DESCRIPTION:★★★★ ‘worlds of thought and feeling‘ The Telegraph\n★★★★ ‘dazzling show‘ Mail on Sunday\n★★★★ ‘a beguiling collection’ The i\n★★★★ ‘an artist’s world encompassed… dizzying pattern and colour‘ The Arts Desk\n★★★★ ‘his best paintings’ TheArtlicker \nThe Holburne presents an extensive exhibition of works by Édouard Vuillard (1868-1940)\, including many that are rarely publicly displayed. Vuillard was one of the leading figures in French art at the end of the 19th-century. Famed for his small\, subtle studies mostly of figures in interiors\, his art is renowned for its modest scale\, intimate subject matter and intense colouring. We celebrate the unique qualities of his early work\, from the 1890s\, in which he balanced an obsession with patterned fabrics and wallpaper with subtle\, domestic psycho-dramas to create paintings with striking emotional intensity. \nDon’t Miss Alastair Sooke in Conversation with the Holburne’s Director 7pm\, 4 September \nSupported by The Exhibition Circle and Vuillard Supporters Group \nGeneral Admission £12.50/ £7 concessions Free entry for 18 and under and Members

SUMMARY:Graham Fagen: The Slave's Lament
DESCRIPTION:Written in 1792\, The Slave’s Lament is Robert Burns’ only work that communicated the appalling realities of the transatlantic slave trade. Despite being more than 200 years old\, the song brings the social\, political and human tragedies of today into sharp focus. \nPerformed by the Scottish Ensemble and reggae singer Ghetto Priest\, artist Graham Fagen’s contemporary interpretation connects Scottish and Caribbean history through these seemingly disparate musical cultures. Presented across four screens\, the result is both haunting and melancholy\, yet common ground is found between Burns’ verse and Jamaican reggae. \nCommissioned by Hospitalfield\, Arbroath and exhibited at Scotland + Venice 2015\, when Graham Fagen represented Scotland at the Venice Biennale. \nGeneral Admission: £12.50 / £7 Concessions Free entry for under 18 and Members

SUMMARY:Why Museums Matter
DESCRIPTION:On the Ballroom table 7 February to 19 May\nWe invited visitors and people in our local community to complete the statement ‘Museums matter to me because…’ as a way of understanding what people value about museums and how the role of museums is understood in contemporary society. This exciting installation is a visual response to over 1\,000 ideas and comments shared with us. \nIn the Wirth Gallery 7 February to 22 April\nCelebrating the role of museums as places of creative inspiration and our Pathways to Wellbeing programme this display showcases the artwork of people who have engaged with individual objects from the Holburne’s collection. It examines the connection between museums\, creativity\, mental health and wellbeing. Each piece will reveal a personal connection\, exploring how individual objects and opportunities to learn new art skills can inspire creative journeys.\nFor more information about Pathways to Wellbeing please visit Pathways to Wellbeing \nDon’t miss related events:\nIn Conversation Tristram Hunt\, Sonia Boyce\, Maria Balshaw and Chris Stephens\nSymposium Why Museums Matter for Mental Health
