SUMMARY:Grayson Perry: The Pre-Therapy Years
DESCRIPTION:Before you visit please read our Museum Charter and Q&A at our coronavirus page. \nThe first exhibition to survey Grayson Perry’s earliest forays into the art world re-introduces the explosive and creative works he made between 1982 and 1994. These ground-breaking ‘lost’ pots are reunited for the first time to focus on the formative years of one of Britain’s most recognisable artists. \nThe show at the Holburne Museum is also remarkable for the fact that many of the 70 items on display have been crowd-sourced from across the UK\, following a hugely successful appeal to the public in 2018. \nToday\, Perry – and his instantly-recognisable alter-ego\, Claire – enjoys a reputation bordering on National Treasure status by virtue of his distinctive tapestry\, collage and ceramic works – that often explore themes of gender\, identity and social class – and his remarkable work as a witty social commentator on television and in print. \nThe Holburne exhibition displays the earliest works – pots\, plates and sculptures – that first made Perry’s name\, and will shine a light on his experimentation and exploration of the potential of pottery to address radical issues and human stories. For art lovers\, Grayson Perry: The Pre-Therapy Years represents a unique opportunity to enjoy the artist’s clever\, playful and politically-engaged perspective on the world through a number of pieces\, many of which have not been seen in public since they were first exhibited. Often challenging and explicit\, these works reveal the early development of Perry’s distinctive voice that has established him as one of the most compelling commentators on contemporary society. \nGrayson Perry notes “This show has been such a joy to put together\, I am really looking forward to seeing these early works again many of which I have not seen since the eighties. It is as near as I will ever get to meeting myself as a young man\, an angrier\, priapic me with huge energy but a much smaller wardrobe.” \nA Book published by Thames & Hudson to accompany the exhibition Grayson Perry The Pre-Therapy Years is Edited by Catrin Jones and Chris Stephens Essays by Grayson Perry\, Andrew Wilson and Catrin Jones. Publication 24 January 2020\, Price: £19.95 available from our shop \nTicket Booking: \nYour entry ticket Includes Grayson Perry The Pre-Therapy Years.\nThis is valid all day for the date you book and are not timed (you can enter any time during our normal opening hours) \n\nThere are no timed entry tickets\nYou can book in advance here\,  or you can also just purchase tickets on arrival at the Museum\nLast Admissions to the Museum is 4.30pm\n\nOnce you have booked online you will receive a confirmation email. Please show this on your mobile or smart device on entry or print it off at home and show on entry.\nWe look forward to seeing you. \nWe would like to thank:\n \n \n Bonhams\nVictoria Miro\nMediaClash\nGreat Western Wine

SUMMARY:BSU Public Lecture Series: The Regency Revolution: Jane Austen\, Napoleon\, Lord Byron\, and the Making of the Modern World
DESCRIPTION:The Regency Revolution: Jane Austen\, Napoleon\, Lord Byron\, and the Making of the Modern World with Professor Robert Morrison\nJoin us for the second event in the Bath Spa University Public Lecture series at the Holburne Museum for 2019/20. All are welcome. Visit bathspalive.com to book your free place.\nThe Regency (1811-1820) is perhaps the most extraordinary decade in British history. It is certainly the decade that marks the emerge of the modern world. It began when the profligate Prince of Wales – the future George IV – replaced his violently insane father\, George III\, as Britain’s ruler. Around the Prince Regent surged a society of steeped in contrasts: piety and hedonism\, elegance and brutality\, exuberance and despair.\nScience thrived. Sir Humphry Davy and his young assistant Michael Faraday invented the miner’s safety lamp\, George Stephenson designed the engines and track that initiated the railroad revolution\, and Charles Babbage developed a blueprint for what would become the modern computer. The arts flourished\, too\, in the novels of Jane Austen and Walter Scott\, the poetry of Samuel Taylor Coleridge\, Percy Shelley\, John Keats\, and Lord Byron\, the paintings of J. M. W. Turner and John Constable\, and the theatrical performances of Edmund Kean and Elizabeth O’Neill.\nThis talk explores the remarkable diversity and energy of the Regency\, and the many ways in which its cultural\, social\, technological\, and political revolutions continue both to haunt and to inspire our world. \nRobert Morrison is British Academy Global Professor at Bath Spa University. SUMMARY:Robertson Lecture 2019: Matthew Williams - Downton Abbey Revealed
DESCRIPTION:Downton Abbey revealed: The Story of Highclere Castle \nThe enormous success of the television series has made Highclere Castle one of the most recognisable buildings in the country. This lecture will reveal that truth is stranger than fiction\, telling the story of the castle and family who own it\, the Earls of Carnarvon. Highclere is a masterpiece of Victorian architecture\, and has fascinating links with ancient Egypt\, the Houses of Parliament – even the world of Royal horse racing. \nMatthew Williams is Curator of Cardiff Castle. He studied the history of Art and Architecture at Nottingham\, before going on to read Art Gallery & Museum Studies at the University of Manchester. He was appointed Keeper of the Collections at Cardiff Castle in 1990\, and has been Head Curator there since 1998. He is widely recognised as a world expert on gothic revival architecture\, particularly the work of William Burges. \nThe Robertson Lectures were established by the Holburne Friends to celebrate the very generous contributions given to the Museum by Charles & Barbara Robertson.

SUMMARY:BSU Public Series: Is Nature Healing? Exploring the History and Future of the ‘Nature Cure’ with Dr Samantha Walton
DESCRIPTION:Is Nature Healing? Exploring the History and Future of the ‘Nature Cure’ with Dr Samantha Walton\nFREE (book your place at bathspalive.com)\nJoin us for the first event in the Bath Spa University Public Lecture series at the Holburne Museum for 2019/20. All are welcome. Visit bathspalive.com to book your free place.\n\nThe ‘nature cure’ has been having a revival in recent years. Doctors are now recommending wild swimming and ‘forest bathing’ to help us cope with stress and anxiety. Schools are taking classrooms outdoors. Mental health charities advise us to get our ‘daily dose of nature\,’ to find ways to ‘switch off’ in parks and nature reserves. In the tiny Scottish archipelago of Shetland\, it is now possible to walk into a doctor’s surgery with symptoms of depression\, and walk out with a drug-free natural prescription\, containing advice on how to ‘connect with the living world’. In this lecture\, I ask where did these ideas come from\, why are they gaining so much attention right now\, and does the ‘nature cure’ really work? I’ll explore the long history and the recent revival of the nature cure\, and ask what is the future of the nature-wellbeing relationship in a rapidly warming world.\nDr Samantha Walton is a Reader in Modern Literature at Bath Spa University. Her research explores the intersection of mental health and ecology. In 2016 she held an environmental humanities research fellowship at IASH\, University of Edinburgh\, working on the writing of Scottish author Nan Shepherd. Samantha was funded by the British Academy in 2015–2017 for the project Landscaping Change\, which explored environmental change through creative practice. She was also funded by the AHRC through their ECR Leadership Fellowship scheme for the project Cultures of Nature and Wellbeing (2016–2018). Samantha coedits the ASLE-UKI journal Green Letters: Studies in Ecocriticism and the poetry publisher Sad Press. Her academic publications include Guilty But Insane: Mind and Law in Golden Age Detective Fiction (OUP\, 2015) and The Living World: Nan Shepherd and Environmental Thought (Punctum\, 2019). In 2018\, she published her first poetry collection\, Self Heal\, from Boiler House Press. She has recently completed a fellowship at the Rachel Carson Centre for Environment and Society in Munich.\nKeep an eye on our website and on bathspalive.com for further details about the next exciting talk in the series on 4 December. \nBath Spa University
