SUMMARY:Up Late Friday: Common Salt - Performance Art
DESCRIPTION:POSTPONED\nPlease see our Coronavirus page for more details\nJoin us on the last Friday of every month from 5-9pm to experience the Museum free after-hours (Grayson Perry exhibition is ticketed). Immerse yourself in an eclectic programme of pop-up talks\, art demos\, installations\, performances\, DJ-sets and cocktails.\nGarden Cafe serving drinks until 8.45pm\nCommon Salt Performances at 5pm and 7.30pm (Please note: seating is limited. Pre-bookable tickets are available from Eventbrite A limited number of seated tickets will be released on the night)\nCommon Salt is a 70-minute performance around a table – a ‘show and tell’. It explores the colonial\, geographical history of England and India taking an expansive and emotional time-travel\, from the first Enclosure Act and the start of the East India Company in the 1600s\, to 21st century narratives of trade\, race and culture. Common Salt is a reckoning that exposes the interconnectedness between history and global power\, artefact and trade\, race and memory. Please note: Performances of Common Salt are free\, but seats are limited so booking on the night is advised. \n“Beautiful\, intriguing and mesmerising performance unpicking the layered entanglements of…the East India Company.” \n“one of the most thought-provoking artistic encounters I’ve had in a long time.” \nLeading the audience through a maze of historical connections\, artists Sue Palmer and Sheila Ghelani activate insights into our shared past. Common Salt lays out a ‘home museum’ of objects and stories on the surface of the ‘nature table’; the Great Hedge of India\, the naturalist Eliza Brightwen\, global trade routes\, species and money\, borders and collections – all accompanied by sung laments and a Shruti box. As we attempt to cut our ties with Europe\, there is a current and keen public interest in hidden history\, in colonial empire and global trade. We are being forced to re-examine our place\, our relations – exactly the territory that Common Salt mines. \n

SUMMARY:Talk: Densities of meaning in West Namibian landscapes with Professor Sian Sullivan
DESCRIPTION:POSTPONED\nPlease see our Coronavirus page for more details\nFREE (Bath Spa Public Lecture Series)\nBook online at www.bathspalive.com\nJoin Sian Sullivan\, Professor of Environment and Culture at Bath Spa University\, to find out more about her research in west Namibia where she has carried out ethnographic and oral history field work for 25 years.\nUsing spoken word\, audio and video to draw alternative understandings of land and nature into view this talk explores the cost to indigenous people in the creation of a celebrated pristine wilderness.\nThis talk introduces a ‘counter-mapping’ project in west Namibia documenting memories of former dwelling places amongst indigenous peoples cleared from landscapes celebrated today as ‘pristine wilderness’. It will combine spoken word\, audio and video to draw alternative understandings of land and nature into view\, asking how can these cultural heritage dimensions be re-entangled with African landscapes now celebrated primarily for their global biodiversity and wilderness values? Sian Sullivan is Professor of Environment and Culture at Bath Spa University.

SUMMARY:Talk: Why is the Mona Lisa the World’s Most Famous Picture? with Richard Kay
DESCRIPTION:In partnership with Lawrences Auctioneers\n  \nLeonardo’s Mona Lisa may claim to be the most famous image in Western Art. 98% of all the visitors to the Louvre go to see it: over 6\,000\,000 people every year. In this talk\, Richard Kay assesses the origins of the picture and its history\, its allure in popular culture and he considers two very different reasons why Leonardo’s masterpiece has now acquired a truly untouchable degree of fame 500 years after it was painted. \nFollowing a degree in the History of Art at the University of St. Andrews\, Richard began his career at Sothebys in 1987. He worked in their salerooms in Chester\, Sussex and London for nearly nine years\, focusing on British and European pictures and prints. Richard joined Lawrences in 1999\, having previously been an Associate Director at Phillips Auctioneers where he oversaw picture sales and valuations for the firm in Central Southern England. \nSince joining Lawrences\, Richard has achieved great successes with works by artists as varied as John Atkinson Grimshaw\, Winifred Nicholson (for whom Lawrences held the world record auction price for almost a decade)\, William Heath Robinson\, Paul Sandby and Joseph Farquharson. He carefully researched an oil painting by John William Godward that was bought for £380\,000. \nRichard is a regular lecturer\, devising talks for study days at Lawrences on themes as varied as Mona Lisa and Minimalism and also speaking to local art groups\, Somerset County Museum\, NADFAS and Sothebys Institute of Art amongst many others. He was a regular contributor to Antique Collecting magazine for over 20 years. \n£10 (includes a complementary tea or coffee)

SUMMARY:Grayson Perry: The Pre-Therapy Years
DESCRIPTION:Before you visit please read our Museum Charter and Q&A at our coronavirus page. \nThe first exhibition to survey Grayson Perry’s earliest forays into the art world re-introduces the explosive and creative works he made between 1982 and 1994. These ground-breaking ‘lost’ pots are reunited for the first time to focus on the formative years of one of Britain’s most recognisable artists. \nThe show at the Holburne Museum is also remarkable for the fact that many of the 70 items on display have been crowd-sourced from across the UK\, following a hugely successful appeal to the public in 2018. \nToday\, Perry – and his instantly-recognisable alter-ego\, Claire – enjoys a reputation bordering on National Treasure status by virtue of his distinctive tapestry\, collage and ceramic works – that often explore themes of gender\, identity and social class – and his remarkable work as a witty social commentator on television and in print. \nThe Holburne exhibition displays the earliest works – pots\, plates and sculptures – that first made Perry’s name\, and will shine a light on his experimentation and exploration of the potential of pottery to address radical issues and human stories. For art lovers\, Grayson Perry: The Pre-Therapy Years represents a unique opportunity to enjoy the artist’s clever\, playful and politically-engaged perspective on the world through a number of pieces\, many of which have not been seen in public since they were first exhibited. Often challenging and explicit\, these works reveal the early development of Perry’s distinctive voice that has established him as one of the most compelling commentators on contemporary society. \nGrayson Perry notes “This show has been such a joy to put together\, I am really looking forward to seeing these early works again many of which I have not seen since the eighties. It is as near as I will ever get to meeting myself as a young man\, an angrier\, priapic me with huge energy but a much smaller wardrobe.” \nA Book published by Thames & Hudson to accompany the exhibition Grayson Perry The Pre-Therapy Years is Edited by Catrin Jones and Chris Stephens Essays by Grayson Perry\, Andrew Wilson and Catrin Jones. Publication 24 January 2020\, Price: £19.95 available from our shop \nTicket Booking: \nYour entry ticket Includes Grayson Perry The Pre-Therapy Years.\nThis is valid all day for the date you book and are not timed (you can enter any time during our normal opening hours) \n\nThere are no timed entry tickets\nYou can book in advance here\,  or you can also just purchase tickets on arrival at the Museum\nLast Admissions to the Museum is 4.30pm\n\nOnce you have booked online you will receive a confirmation email. Please show this on your mobile or smart device on entry or print it off at home and show on entry.\nWe look forward to seeing you. \nWe would like to thank:\n \n \n Bonhams\nVictoria Miro\nMediaClash\nGreat Western Wine

SUMMARY:BSU Public Lecture Series: The Regency Revolution: Jane Austen\, Napoleon\, Lord Byron\, and the Making of the Modern World
DESCRIPTION:The Regency Revolution: Jane Austen\, Napoleon\, Lord Byron\, and the Making of the Modern World with Professor Robert Morrison\nJoin us for the second event in the Bath Spa University Public Lecture series at the Holburne Museum for 2019/20. All are welcome. Visit bathspalive.com to book your free place.\nThe Regency (1811-1820) is perhaps the most extraordinary decade in British history. It is certainly the decade that marks the emerge of the modern world. It began when the profligate Prince of Wales – the future George IV – replaced his violently insane father\, George III\, as Britain’s ruler. Around the Prince Regent surged a society of steeped in contrasts: piety and hedonism\, elegance and brutality\, exuberance and despair.\nScience thrived. Sir Humphry Davy and his young assistant Michael Faraday invented the miner’s safety lamp\, George Stephenson designed the engines and track that initiated the railroad revolution\, and Charles Babbage developed a blueprint for what would become the modern computer. The arts flourished\, too\, in the novels of Jane Austen and Walter Scott\, the poetry of Samuel Taylor Coleridge\, Percy Shelley\, John Keats\, and Lord Byron\, the paintings of J. M. W. Turner and John Constable\, and the theatrical performances of Edmund Kean and Elizabeth O’Neill.\nThis talk explores the remarkable diversity and energy of the Regency\, and the many ways in which its cultural\, social\, technological\, and political revolutions continue both to haunt and to inspire our world. \nRobert Morrison is British Academy Global Professor at Bath Spa University. He is the author of The Regency Revolution: Jane Austen\, Napoleon\, Lord Byron\, and the Making of the Modern World. His biography of Thomas De Quincey\, The English Opium-Eater\, was a finalist for the James Tait Black Prize. Morrison has edited Austen’s Persuasion for Harvard University Press\, and De Quincey’s Confessions of an English Opium-Eater for Oxford University Press.
