SUMMARY:Nhair
DESCRIPTION:Outdoor Performance \nConny can’t get her garden to grow. She’s tried everything\, but all that’s there is soil. And honestly? It’s starting to piss her off. Couple that with a struggling career\, a less-than-thrilling sex life\, and being a small\, broke\, chubby girl in her twenties\, and Conny’s having a pretty sh*t time. Oh. And she’s also really hairy. \nConny Hancock and Greedy Pig Theatre Company join forces for a hilarious\, empowering and brutally honest ode to self-love in this R&D of ‘Nhair’\, coming to Sparkfest 2021. \nThe performance will be followed by a Q&A. \n/wp-content/uploads/2021/05/SparkFest-Trailer-mini.mp4

SUMMARY:Nicholas Pope: Portraits of a Marriage
DESCRIPTION:In Portraits of a Marriage the Holburne presents\, for the very first time\, ten sculptures which depict – in characteristically entertaining\, abstract but honest form – Nicholas Pope and his wife at different stages of their life together during more than 40 years of marriage. The series began in 1978 with Mr and Mrs Arnolfini and culminated last year (2020) with Mr and Mrs Pope Dead and Buried\, which was made in the shadow of the late Janet Pope’s terminal cancer. The exhibition encapsulates Nicholas Pope’s personal development over five decades\, exploring a variety of psychological states and the nature of his relationship with Janet in sculptures of wood\, metal\, glass\, ceramic and shrunken wool. Many of the sculptures have a related drawing\, which will be displayed alongside the corresponding sculpture. \nEntry is included in your general admission ticket. \nDON’T MISS Nicholas Pope in Conversation with George Vasey 7pm Thursday 19 August – FREE \nFurther information about this display can be found in the media release \nSupported by \nHenry Moore Foundation

SUMMARY:Precious and Rare: Islamic Metalwork from the Courtauld
DESCRIPTION:Ten remarkable highlights from The Courtauld’s world-class collection of Islamic metalwork\, which have rarely left London since their bequest over fifty years ago\, are now on display at the Holburne. \nDating from the 13th to 16th centuries\, these objects are some of the finest examples of this intricate craft from modern-day Iraq\, Iran\, Syria\, Egypt and Turkey. \nOne exceptionally rare piece is The Courtauld Bag\, made in Mosul (present-day northern Iraq) in around 1300-1330 for a noble lady of the Persian-Mongol court. This bag is recognised as one of the finest pieces of Islamic inlaid metalwork in existence and the only surviving object of its kind. \nAnother highlight will be the exquisite bowl-shaped box signed by a craftsman known as Master Mahmud al-Kurdi. This box is the only known example with a dual-language signature\, in both Arabic and Latin script indicating that it was intended for a European market. \nSuch was the renown of Islamic metalwork in Europe during the Renaissance that Venetian craftsmen attempted to compete with the beauty and magnificence of these objects by creating imitation pieces. This show will also include examples of  Venetian inlaid work\, a dish (c.1530-50) with the coat of arms of the Sagredo family\, and a pair of candlesticks (early 16th century) exploring the role of Venice as a pivotal juncture between the Eastern and Western Mediterranean. \nDon’t miss our free online talk\, 7pm 24 June\, exploring Islamic art with Dr Sussan Babaie Professor of the Arts of Iran and Islam at The Courtauld. \nAdmission to this display is included in your General Admission Ticket. \nThe exhibition has been made possible through a collaboration between The Courtauld and the Subject Specialist Network (SSN) in Islamic Art and Material Culture at Birmingham Museums Trust\, and with support from Art Fund. Supported at the Holburne by the Barakat Trust

SUMMARY:Canaletto: Painting Venice ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
DESCRIPTION:Presenting the most important set of paintings of Venice by Canaletto (1697 – 1768)\, which have left their home at Woburn Abbey – one of world’s most important private art collections – for the first time in more than 70 years. \nThis once in a lifetime exhibition will enable art lovers to enjoy and study up-close twenty-three beautiful paintings\, in a fascinating exhibition that also explores Canaletto’s life and work\, alongside themes of 18th-century Venice and the Grand Tour. This is one of the rare occasions that any of the successive Dukes of Bedford and Trustees of the Bedford Estates have lent the set of paintings since they arrived in Britain from Canaletto in the 1730s. \nThey were commissioned by the 4th Duke of Bedford\, who was evidently attracted by Canaletto’s burgeoning reputation for producing precise and atmospheric views of the Italian city’s most iconic views and landmarks. The Duke\, then Lord John Russell\, was in Venice on the Grand Tour in 1731\, and presumably met Joseph Smith\, Canaletto’s newly appointed agent\, who was a Venetian resident and later British consul there. Three bills from Smith to the Duke survive in the family papers; dated 1733\, 1735 and 1736\, those add up to just over £188 (about £16\,000 today)\, and must be incomplete\, judging from what we know of the prices Canaletto commanded. \nCreated over a nine-year period\, when the artist was at the pinnacle of his career\, the Woburn Abbey paintings are the largest set of paintings that Canaletto ever produced\, and much the largest that has remained together. The Holburne exhibition provides a unique and unprecedented opportunity to see these exceptional paintings at viewing height\, as they normally hang three high in the setting in the Dining Room they have occupied at Woburn since the late eighteenth century. The set features not only classic views of the Grand Canal and the Piazza S. Marco but also some of the city’s less well-known nooks and crannies\, rarely captured by other artists and revealing new historical and cultural perspectives on Venice in its last decades as the “most serene Republic”. \nTicket Booking: \nBefore you visit please read our Museum Charter and Q&A at our coronavirus page. \nYour entry ticket Includes Canaletto: Painting Venice\, Precious & Rare: Islamic Metalwork from The Courtauld\, and Nicholas Pope: Portraits of a Marriage in addition to our permanent collection. Valid all day for the date you book and not timed (you can enter any time during our normal opening hours). There are no timed entry tickets. \nYou can book in advance here\, or you can also just purchase tickets on arrival at the Museum.\nLast Admissions to the Museum is 4.30pm. \nOnce you have booked online you will receive a confirmation email. Please show this on your mobile or smart device on entry or print it off at home and show on entry. \nWe look forward to seeing you. \nDon’t miss our free online talk exploring how Canaletto’s paintings of Venice have been used to measure changing sea levels 7pm\, 8 July. \nSupported by:\nVan and Eva DuBose\nPatrons of the Holburne Museum\nBonhams\nBritish Italian Society\nFiol Prosecco\nThe Gladys Krieble Delmas Foundation\nReymond Langton Design

Pre-bookable tickets are available from Eventbrite A limited number of seated tickets will be released on the night)\nCommon Salt is a 70-minute performance around a table – a ‘show and tell’. It explores the colonial\, geographical history of England and India taking an expansive and emotional time-travel\, from the first Enclosure Act and the start of the East India Company in the 1600s\, to 21st century narratives of trade\, race and culture. Common Salt is a reckoning that exposes the interconnectedness between history and global power\, artefact and trade\, race and memory. Please note: Performances of Common Salt are free\, but seats are limited so booking on the night is advised. \n“Beautiful\, intriguing and mesmerising performance unpicking the layered entanglements of…the East India Company.” \n“one of the most thought-provoking artistic encounters I’ve had in a long time.” \nLeading the audience through a maze of historical connections\, artists Sue Palmer and Sheila Ghelani activate insights into our shared past. Common Salt lays out a ‘home museum’ of objects and stories on the surface of the ‘nature table’; the Great Hedge of India\, the naturalist Eliza Brightwen\, global trade routes\, species and money\, borders and collections – all accompanied by sung laments and a Shruti box. As we attempt to cut our ties with Europe\, there is a current and keen public interest in hidden history\, in colonial empire and global trade. We are being forced to re-examine our place\, our relations – exactly the territory that Common Salt mines. \n
