SUMMARY:Rossetti's Portraits
DESCRIPTION:This autumn sees a unique show devoted to one of the giants of Victorian art – the first ever exhibition dedicated to Dante Gabriel Rossetti’s portraits. \nThe Times ⭐⭐⭐⭐ \nYou can book in advance here\, or you can also just purchase tickets on arrival at the Museum. \nA unique show devoted to one of the giants of Victorian art open at the Holburne Museum – the first ever exhibition dedicated to Dante Gabriel Rossetti’s portraits. Rossetti’s Portraits features such iconic artworks as The Blue Bower (1865) and Blue Silk Dress (Jane Morris) (1868)\, which reveals the artist at the height of his creative powers\, alongside less well-known\, but equally compelling drawings of his inner circle\, including his intense and thoughtful portrait of William Holman Hunt\, made on the morning of 12 April 1853 at John Everett Millais’s studio\, when members of the Brotherhood gathered to draw each another. \nBest known for his sensuous visions of female beauty painted in oil\, Rossetti (1828–1882)  also produced portraits of at least 90 different people throughout his career\, including his family\, members of the Pre-Raphaelite circle\, patrons\, models\, friends in the wider art world and the three women — Elizabeth Siddal\, Fanny Cornforth and Jane Morris — who dominated his art and life. The portraits Rossetti made of the people who mattered to him record an irrecoverable moment in the life of the individual represented. At the same time\, each tells us much about the artist and how he viewed those closest to him. \nMany of the works in this show demonstrate Rossetti’s conventional portraits\, made as tokens of friendship\, respect and affection. We have also included several examples of works that blur the boundaries between portraiture and abstract or narrative compositions\, in which the models’ identities are brought to the fore as they pose as literary or biblical figures whose lives parallel their own. This entanglement of art and life\, character and model\, subject painting and portraiture\, highlights the multiple layers of meaning behind many of Rossetti’s work. \nImage: Blue Silk Dress (Jane Morris)\, Dante Gabriel Rossetti\, 1868 © Society of Antiquaries of London: Kelmscott Manor \nSupported by: \n \nEnjoy this exhibition with your general admission ticket which also includes Sunil Gupta: The New Pre-Raphaelites and ceramics by Angell & Claydon. \nDon’t Miss\nAmber Butchart’s free zoom lecture on Pre-Raphaelite fashion \nTickets & Booking  \nBefore you visit please read our Museum Charter and Q&A at our coronavirus page.\nYour entry ticket Includes all of our Special exhibitions\, temporary displays in addition to our permanent collection. SUMMARY:Each Portrait is a Kind of Truth: Picturing Jane Austen
DESCRIPTION:‘I hear such different accounts of you as puzzle me exceedingly’.  Elizabeth Bennet’s words to Mr Darcy could apply equally to accounts of Jane Austen herself. \nWhat did Jane Austen look like?  The best-authenticated portrait (currently on display as a rare loan at the Holburne) is the sketch by her sister Cassandra\, but many people have found it unsatisfactory.  Why is that?  Is it because it seems unfinished? amateurish? scowling?  Or is it because it does not conform to our view of how we think she should have looked?  There are other contenders as portraits and other descriptions from those who knew her.  Are all of them like her in some way? \nProfessor Kathryn Sutherland is Senior Research Fellow\, St Anne’s College\, Oxford. Her books include Jane Austen’s Textual Lives: From Aeschylus to Bollywood (2005) and Jane Austen’s Fiction Manuscripts (2018). \nBook your FREE ticket on eventbrite
