SUMMARY:Holburne Open Gerry Eaton
DESCRIPTION:The series is called From Here to The Hawkstone and was made in 2020. I made repetitive walks from my home in rural West Oxfordshire to The Hawkstone – a Neolithic standing stone about a mile from my home. The work was made sequentially\, from foraged dyestuffs\,  each piece representing a month of the year. Along side each piece are my diary observations of each month. \nThe idea behind the project that I am working on is to investigate the area/ community where I live and then present my findings back to the community through art. I spent  several months researching last year and interviewing people who had worked on the land locally. I was lucky enough to interview a 95 year old land girl  who had come down to area  from Sheffield after the  blitz\, also a weaver from the local mill which closed 42 years ago. The local museum let me have a piece of tweed that was made at the mill which I am currently incorporating into some work. \nGERRY EATON

SUMMARY:The Tudors: Passion\, Power & Politics ⭐⭐⭐⭐
DESCRIPTION:In our opening exhibition of 2022\, The Tudors: Passion\, Power and Politics\, you will come face-to-face with the five Tudor monarchs – Henry VII\, Henry VIII\, Edward VI\, Mary I and Elizabeth I – who\, to this day\, remain some of the most familiar figures in English history; not least because these instantly recognisable portraits have preserved their likenesses for five centuries. \nThe Times ⭐⭐⭐⭐\nThe Telegraph ⭐⭐⭐⭐ \nYou can book in advance here\, or you can also just purchase tickets on arrival at the Museum. \nThis focused exhibition\, developed in partnership with the National Portrait Gallery and National Museums Liverpool\, includes some of the most iconic images in British painting\, including the ‘Darnley’ and ‘Armada’ portraits of Elizabeth I. Several of the works have never been shown outside London\, including a portrait of Jane Seymour after Hans Holbein the Younger and the highly unusual Sir Henry Unton (c.1558–1596) portrait\, which was painted posthumously and charts key moments in his life and death. \nThrough the portraits\, the exhibition explores this torrid period of religious conflict and political intrigue\, the legacies of which continue to reverberate through contemporary British life. It features vivid likenesses of many of the most significant figures of the time\, including Sir Francis Drake and Sir Walter Raleigh\, Thomas Cranmer\, Thomas More\, William Cecil and Thomas Cromwell\, whose fame has recently been revived by Hilary Mantel’s Wolf Hall trilogy. \nBeginning with the oldest painting in the NPG’s collection\, a 1505 portrait of the first Tudor king\, Henry VII\, the exhibition follows the family’s successive generations and their courtiers\, including the Protestant spymaster Sir Francis Walsingham (c.1585) and Nicholas Hilliard’s dashing miniature portrait of Sir Walter Raleigh (c.1585). \nImage credit: Queen Elizabeth I by Unknown artist\, circa 1588 © National Portrait Gallery\, London \nThis exhibition at the Holburne Museum is kindly supported by The Tudors: Passion\, Power and Politics Exhibition Supporters Circle: \nDr and Mrs Martin Clarke\nEva and Van DuBose \n \nWith additional support from the Holburne Museum’s Director’s Circle\, Patrons\, and Friends. \nTickets & Booking  \nBefore you visit please read our Museum Charter and Q&A at our coronavirus page.\nYour entry ticket Includes all of our Special exhibitions\, temporary displays in addition to our permanent collection. Valid all day for the date you book and not timed (you can enter any time during our normal opening hours). There are no timed entry tickets.\nYou can book in advance here\, or you can also just purchase tickets on arrival at the Museum.\nLast Admissions to the Museum is 4.30pm.\nOnce you have booked online you will receive a confirmation email. Please show this on your mobile or smart device on entry or print it off at home and show on entry. \nWe look forward to seeing you.

SUMMARY:People Make Museums
DESCRIPTION:People Make Museums is a celebration of creativity and the importance of people in museums. \nPeople bring stories\, memories\, lived experience and ways of seeing which constantly reinvigorate and challenge museums and their collections. It is people that make museums relevant. \nYou can book in advance here\, or you can also just purchase tickets on arrival at the Museum. \nThe sculptures in this exhibition aim to capture some of these complex\, personal moments of connection; the fleeting conversations\, sudden revelations\, unspoken thoughts\, sensations and feelings evoked by museum spaces and objects. \nThese are the experiences which shape our relationships with museums and art galleries – and in turn shape and inform what museums are and can be. \nShowcasing over 20 sculptural pieces selected by a panel of colleagues from the Arts\, Health and Museum sectors these artworks have been specially made for this exhibition. Contributors range from those who have participated in Bath Museums’ partnership Pathways to Wellbeing creative groups as well as museum staff\, volunteers\, professional artists and creative facilitators who are part of this growing creative community. \nSupported by\nand St John’s\, Bath \nTickets & Booking  \nBefore you visit please read our Museum Charter and Q&A at our coronavirus page.\nYour entry ticket Includes all of our Special exhibitions\, temporary displays in addition to our permanent collection. \nThis exhibition accompanies Museums & Care – Learning Symposium. \nLEARNING SYMPOSIUM for Heritage\, Health and Arts professionals and everyone interested in therapeutic creativity and care in museums.  \nFriday 29 April\, 10 am – 4.15 pm \nTickets – £35 per person (includes welcome refreshments and free entry to the museum for the day) \nMuseums care for their collections but they also care about people. \nThis cross-sector event will bring together museums\, arts organisations and mental health professionals to talk about how care is manifested in museums. With a focus on creativity and therapeutic spaces we’ll examine good practice\, share learning and hear from people who have participated in ‘heritage and health’ programmes . \nCome to be inspired and supported\, build networks and grab some practical ideas! \nFollow our creative community on Instagram @changing_lives_through_art  \nFor full event listing and booking link please see – https://www.eventbrite.co.uk/e/people-make-museums-museums-care-tickets-268852443897 \nWe look forward to seeing you.

SUMMARY:Mick Peter: Old Ghosts
DESCRIPTION:Old Ghosts  is an exhibition of new work by Glasgow-based artist\, Mick Peter. Old Ghosts takes a wry and affectionate look at the idea of history as an industry. In several surprising interventions\, inside and outside the Holburne Museum\, visitors will encounter amusing tableaux which appear to be cartoons that have come to life. \nYou can book in advance here\, or you can also just purchase tickets on arrival at the Museum. \nOld Ghosts creates a narrative trail through the Museum and its Garden that humorously critiques the conventions of heritage sites. Outside the gallery\, there will be what appears to be an archaeological dig complete with a half-buried “Roman” road\, although the artefacts being revealed are somewhat ‘wrong’. Meanwhile\, on the Holburne’s famous facade – known to Jane Austen as the Sydney Hotel\, and more recently to fans of the Bridgerton TV series as the home of Lady Danbury – facing Great Pulteney Street\, a hapless signwriter desperately tries to complete his task of refreshing the Museum’s signage. \nInside the Museum a screen test takes place in the ballroom\, with the backdrop a drawn (everything is derived from Peter’s drawings) version of a Georgian room but with camera operators\, runners\, take-away coffees\, and the other paraphernalia of a film set. Here\, Mick Peter is playfully riffing on the Holburne’s role as both an art gallery and a film location\, along with the history of Bath and\, in so doing\, is contemplating a new way of thinking about the Museum in the 21st-century. \nSupported by: \n \n  \n  \n  \n  \nImage credit: Studio Selfie (c) Mick Peter \nTickets & Booking\nBefore you visit please read our Museum Charter and Q&A at our coronavirus page.\nYour entry ticket Includes all of our Special exhibitions\, temporary displays in addition to our permanent collection. \n*To celebrate the opening of our latest exhibition Mick Peter: Old Ghosts we are delighted to offer free museum entry for families February half term (19-27 February) and Easter holidays (9-24 April) 2022.* \nCollect a free family activity trail from the museum front desk and explore the Holburne in a new way! Available every weekend and school holiday. \nWe look forward to seeing you.

SUMMARY:Freelands Fellowship Talk by Catherine Parsonage
DESCRIPTION:BATH SPA UNIVERSITY TALKS AT THE HOLBURNE \nCatherine Parsonage is the inaugural Freelands Painting Fellow at Bath Spa University\, (2021). The Freelands Foundation launched a two-year pilot programme of Painting Fellowships in partnership with three universities across the UK. The Fellowships provide new\, alternative opportunities for emerging artists to contribute to conversations around the teaching of painting.\nThis artist talk will present the new body of work and research that Catherine Parsonage has been developing during her time as Freelands Fellow. The current series of paintings find humour in the mythologised\, machismo narratives of art history. Parsonage is particularly interested in the social network of the artist and how anecdotes and tawdry biographical details can form the foundation for how art histories are remembered and understood. Parsonage will discuss the new body of work in the context of her wider artistic and teaching practice. \nFREE  – BUT REGISTRATION REQUIRED VIA BOOKING LINK

SUMMARY:Art\, Activism and Queering India
DESCRIPTION:Free Zoom Lecture with artist Sunil Gupta 7pm Thursday 11 November \nJoin artist Sunil Gupta in this talk where he discusses creating a new iconography of same sex desire. He notes of his series of pictures\, ‘The Pre-Raphaelite group of painters in England were formed to contest the stifling norms of their world and to express a new moral seriousness and sincerity in their works; especially fluidity around sexuality and gender. I’ve chosen to adapt their focus on camp and sensuality and the arrangement of the body and update it all to visualise a modern Indian queer identity.’ \nSunil Gupta The New Pre-Raphaelites #13 Courtesy the artist and Hales Gallery\, Stephen Bulger Gallery and Vadehra Art Gallery. © Sunil Gupta. SUMMARY:Sunil Gupta: The New Pre-Raphaelites
DESCRIPTION:To accompany its major new exhibition of Dante Gabriel Rossetti’s portraits\, the Holburne is proud to announce a display of photographs by Sunil Gupta that explore the legacy of the Pre-Raphaelites and their influence on contemporary art. \nYou can book in advance here\, or you can also just purchase tickets on arrival at the Museum. \nIn 2008\, London-based artist and photographer Sunil Gupta (b.1953\, New Delhi) was commissioned by Autograph gallery in London\, to produce a body of work connected to LGBTQI+ rights in India. The resulting series of ten photographs referenced the struggle against Section 377 of the Indian Penal Code. Instituted during British rule in the 1860s\, it criminalised gay sex between consenting adults and remained in place until it was finally repealed by the Supreme Court of India in September 2018. \nKnown as the Anti-Sodomy Law\, Section 377 facilitated the arbitrary arrest and exploitation of LGBTQI+ Indians. In turn\, this led to a closeted culture where alternate sexuality was pushed underground and made researching and treating serious medical problems such as STDs and HIV/AIDS extremely difficult. \nGupta’s photographs allude to works by members of the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood\, an artistic movement founded in 1848\, only a few years before Section 377 was introduced. He says: “I was struck first by the vividness of the [paintings’] colours and then by the ambivalent sexuality of their subject matter.” \nInspired by the Tate’s collection\, Gupta invited friends and fellow activists to model for him and re-enact the original works; at the time their involvement constituted an act of resistance\, courage\, and commitment\, much like their UK counterparts who campaigned against Section 28 (in effect between 1988 and 2003 in England and Wales). \nThrough Gupta’s lens\, well-known paintings such as Henry Wallis’ Chatterton (1856)\, Edouard Manet’s Olympia (1863)\, Sir John Everett Millais’ Mariana (1851) and Dante Gabriel Rossetti’s Paolo and Francesca da Rimini (1867)\, take on a new meaning as he reinterprets them. The New Pre-Raphaelites is representative of Gupta’s work\, which spans three decades and documents his own life and involvement with issues of gender\, sexuality\, displacement and his own diagnosis in 1995 of being HIV positive. This display of tightly composed images effectively force the viewer to confront a juxtaposition with an alternative social reality. Also\, as the Pre-Raphaelites observed in the 1800s\, Gupta’s photographs transpose the private into the public. In Gupta’s photographs\, these ‘truths’ become gay couples\, single men and women\, and groups posing romantically\, glimpsed in moments of passion and emotion. Combining symbolism and realism – just like the paintings that inspired them – the images concentrate on the real people who occupy the space of each print and\, in some instances\, show what would be deemed criminal intent according to Section 377\, but most will recognise as an act of love. \nRichly coloured\, textured and patterned backdrops highlight the sitters’ colourful costumes\, and their occasional nudity\, Gupta demonstrates his eye for detail. It is important to note that the women portrayed in The New Pre-Raphaelites were at the time living on the margins of society. Although technically free from accusations of committing the crime of sodomy\, before 2018 they risked being hunted down and\, in some cases\, burnt alive by their families who would rather see them dead than face social ostracism. \nEnjoy this exhibition with your general admission ticket which also includes Rossetti’s Portraits and ceramics by Angell & Claydon. \nBook your FREE ticket to hear Sunil Gupta 7pm 11 November ‘Art\, Activism & Queering India’. \nTickets & Booking  \nBefore you visit please read our Museum Charter and Q&A at our coronavirus page. \nYour entry ticket Includes all of our Special exhibitions\, temporary displays in addition to our permanent collection. SUMMARY:Rossetti's Portraits
DESCRIPTION:This autumn sees a unique show devoted to one of the giants of Victorian art – the first ever exhibition dedicated to Dante Gabriel Rossetti’s portraits. \nThe Times ⭐⭐⭐⭐ \nYou can book in advance here\, or you can also just purchase tickets on arrival at the Museum. \nA unique show devoted to one of the giants of Victorian art open at the Holburne Museum – the first ever exhibition dedicated to Dante Gabriel Rossetti’s portraits. Rossetti’s Portraits features such iconic artworks as The Blue Bower (1865) and Blue Silk Dress (Jane Morris) (1868)\, which reveals the artist at the height of his creative powers\, alongside less well-known\, but equally compelling drawings of his inner circle\, including his intense and thoughtful portrait of William Holman Hunt\, made on the morning of 12 April 1853 at John Everett Millais’s studio\, when members of the Brotherhood gathered to draw each another. \nBest known for his sensuous visions of female beauty painted in oil\, Rossetti (1828–1882)  also produced portraits of at least 90 different people throughout his career\, including his family\, members of the Pre-Raphaelite circle\, patrons\, models\, friends in the wider art world and the three women — Elizabeth Siddal\, Fanny Cornforth and Jane Morris — who dominated his art and life. The portraits Rossetti made of the people who mattered to him record an irrecoverable moment in the life of the individual represented. At the same time\, each tells us much about the artist and how he viewed those closest to him. \nMany of the works in this show demonstrate Rossetti’s conventional portraits\, made as tokens of friendship\, respect and affection. We have also included several examples of works that blur the boundaries between portraiture and abstract or narrative compositions\, in which the models’ identities are brought to the fore as they pose as literary or biblical figures whose lives parallel their own. This entanglement of art and life\, character and model\, subject painting and portraiture\, highlights the multiple layers of meaning behind many of Rossetti’s work. \nImage: Blue Silk Dress (Jane Morris)\, Dante Gabriel Rossetti\, 1868 © Society of Antiquaries of London: Kelmscott Manor \nSupported by: \n \nEnjoy this exhibition with your general admission ticket which also includes Sunil Gupta: The New Pre-Raphaelites and ceramics by Angell & Claydon. \nDon’t Miss\nAmber Butchart’s free zoom lecture on Pre-Raphaelite fashion \nTickets & Booking  \nBefore you visit please read our Museum Charter and Q&A at our coronavirus page.\nYour entry ticket Includes all of our Special exhibitions\, temporary displays in addition to our permanent collection. SUMMARY:Each Portrait is a Kind of Truth: Picturing Jane Austen
DESCRIPTION:‘I hear such different accounts of you as puzzle me exceedingly’.  Elizabeth Bennet’s words to Mr Darcy could apply equally to accounts of Jane Austen herself. \nWhat did Jane Austen look like?  The best-authenticated portrait (currently on display as a rare loan at the Holburne) is the sketch by her sister Cassandra\, but many people have found it unsatisfactory.  Why is that?  Is it because it seems unfinished? amateurish? scowling?  Or is it because it does not conform to our view of how we think she should have looked?  There are other contenders as portraits and other descriptions from those who knew her.  Are all of them like her in some way? \nProfessor Kathryn Sutherland is Senior Research Fellow\, St Anne’s College\, Oxford. Her books include Jane Austen’s Textual Lives: From Aeschylus to Bollywood (2005) and Jane Austen’s Fiction Manuscripts (2018). \nBook your FREE ticket on eventbrite
