SUMMARY:David Hockney Love Life Drawings 1963 to 1977
DESCRIPTION:Book your tickets in advance or pay on arrival. If you’re a member there’s no need to pre-book.\nYour General Entry ticket includes entry to all exhibitions and the collection \nA sumptuous collection of rarely seen drawings by one of our most popular and recognisable artists\n\nThe Telegraph  ⭐⭐⭐⭐ “Hockney at his most irresistible” Lucy Davies \nFinancial Times “David Hockney’s genius is distilled in the mesmerising show ‘Love Life’… Some of the most glorious drawings of the 20th century are to be found in an intimate\, fizzing encounter with the artist… a very sexy show… ‘Love Life’ looks back\, forward\, celebrates the present and — especially when followed by lunch in the Holburne’s magnificent garden — is as life-affirming as its title implies.” Jackie Wullschlager \nIn 2017\, prior to the opening of a retrospective exhibition at the Centre Pompidou in Paris\, David Hockney (b.1937) painted the words ‘Love Life’ on the final wall of the show. Explaining his actions\, he said: “I love my work. And I think the work has love\, actually … I love life. I write it at the end of letters – ‘Love life\, David Hockney.” \nThat simple exhortation is a now common refrain for the artist\, who regularly appeals for people to enjoy the simple beauty of the world around them. Although Hockney’s love of life has been exemplified through recent bodies of work\, such as depicting the progress of spring in his native Yorkshire (2011-13) and\, most recently\, in Normandy (2020)\, the Holburne’s new exhibition will demonstrate how Hockney’s ‘Love Life’ dictum has underpinned his art since the 1960s. \nHockney’s delight in the world is no better demonstrated than in the drawings he made in the late 1960s and 1970s. Visitors to the exhibition will be able to marvel at his extraordinary power of observation and skill in using tiny\, mundane details to help capture a situation\, a sitter’s character\, or a place. \nCounterbalancing his more everyday subjects\, Hockney’s depictions of his friends remind us of the elevated circles he was already moving in during the formative stages of his career\, including three great writers of the 1930s (seen in later life)\, W.H. Auden (1907-1973)\, Christopher Isherwood (1904-1986) and Stephen Spender (1909-1995)\, the aforementioned Peter Langan (1941-1988)\, plus Celia Birtwell (b.1941) and Ossie Clark (1942-1996)\, the subjects of one of his most iconic paintings\, Mr. and Mrs. Clark and Percy (1971). \nDon’t Miss\nBruno Wollheim in Conversation with Chris Stephens\nChris Stephens Love Life lecture \nGenerously supported by: \n \nWith Additional Support from Kathryn Uhde\nAnd the Love Life: David Hockney Supporters Circle:\nHamish Parker  Lydia & Manfred GorvyStuart & Bianca RodenClore WyndhamThomas Gibson Fine Art Hazlitt Holland-Hibbert \nThe Holburne Director’s Circle\, Patrons and Friends \nDavid Hockney\n"Ossie Wearing a Fairisle Sweater" 1970\nColored pencil on paper\n17 x 14"\n© David Hockney\nPhoto Credit: Fabrice Gibert

SUMMARY:Marvellous Makers\, Wondrous Worlds Raised Embroidery from the 17th century
DESCRIPTION:Book your day ticket in advance here  or just turn up on the day and purchase entry tickets at our Information desk. (Friends and Members no need to book in advance). \nYour General Entry ticket includes entry to all exhibitions and the collection \nRegardless of their social status\, most women were expected to be competent at needlework during the 17th-century\, but only a privileged few were able to afford the time or materials to make decorative embroidered pictures. Most were made by young\, highly skilled non-professional needlewomen in wealthy households and were designed to display their mastery of the craft. Described as ‘curious work’ by its contemporaries\, raised embroidery was considered unfashionable in the eighteenth century\, despised through most of the nineteenth and reassessed in the twentieth\, and it was passed down mainly by women who preserved the legacy of their female forebears. \nThe Holburne Museum has an important collection of raised embroidery and other 17th-century textiles. A focussed loan exhibition in the Wirth Gallery will complement and highlight the significance of this part of the collection through a jewel-like show that will allow visitors to look closely at these exceptional objects. \nAmong the topics addressed in the exhibition will be the gender bias of this form of art\, the divide between domestic crafts and the more prestigious and public-facing textile art\, the connections between the materials employed and the trade relationships of the period\, and the enduring legacy of embroidery in contemporary material culture. \nThere will be a free online talk to accompany the show with Joana Vasconcelos at 7pm 20 June. \nWe also have a workshop in partnership with the Royal School of Needlework 3 September. \n\nThis exhibition has been kindly supported by: \n \nThe Broderers’ Charity Trust \n \nNicholas and Judith Goodison Charitable Settlement\nAnd those who wish to remain anonymous.

SUMMARY:Holburne Open Joshua Donkor
DESCRIPTION:2022 I have more souls than one \n“People and stories are ultimately what influences my work\, this is why I often describe my practice as visual narration. A lot of the work I make is also deeply personal and stems from my family history\, particularly my Fathers upbringing our Ghanaian heritage.\nThe new body of work I’m currently developing seeks to explore transcultural and African Diasporic experiences in the Western world and how this is felt through the different generations of family.\nThis project stemmed from my most recent journey back to Ghana at the start of 2022 with my cousin.\nAs we have grown older our relationship with Ghana has continued to evolve. 2022 represented somewhat of a passing of the torch as my cousin was expected to take on more responsibilities within her family.\nThis brought into focus many questions about our relationship and connection to Ghana as members of the African Diaspora. Although we have grown up with many Ghanaian cultural influences within our lives\, unlike our parents and those before\, we have not grown up there.\nThis has led to a feeling of slight disconnection from our heritage\, felt most notably whenever we return.\nThese new portraits include a range of image transfer techniques which blend archival family images dating back decades with glimpses of the present taken from my most recent journey back to Ghana.\nThis acts as a representation of all the generations\, time periods and memories that have informed our past\, and which will continue to influence our future.” \nJoshua Donkor \nOpening times\nThe Gallery at the Edge\, University of Bath\, is free to enter and is open from Wednesday to Saturday 11am to 4pm.\nThe Edge will be closed from 2 to 5 June.\nAlso on show David Robertson

SUMMARY:Holburne Open David Robertson
DESCRIPTION:Suffering in Silence \nDavid Robertson’s immersive print installation explores the stigma around mental health and the difficulties men have in reaching out for help. Consisting of 25 life-sized men\, the figure is a self-portrait but is representative of any man. Formed of tally marks\, each mark representing an individual. Walking through the large-scale installation is a bewildering and disturbing experience. The figures surround and tower above you\, moving unpredictably. As your pathway through keeps shifting\, the weight of burden becomes apparent. David comments: ‘The prints were editioned three and a half years ago\, but it’s only now that I’ve been able to show them how it was originally conceived. I’m really excited that a print installation was selected for a white cube gallery.’ \nDuring his six-week residency at the Andrew Brownsword Gallery at the University of Bath until 18 June\, David will be working on a series of prints\, from his sketches documenting the changing landscape. Walking and drawing is an important part of David’s practice that he uses to maintain mental wellbeing. Insta: @multiple_of_one \nInstallation view: Suffering in Silence\, 2018. Woodcut\, each 2000 x 910 mm. SUMMARY:Science and Art
DESCRIPTION:Science and Art is an exploration of how science plays a huge role in the detection of art forgeries. \nPeople often see art and science as unrelated\, but they are more intertwined than thought. The techniques used to detect art forgeries rely on different types of light\, such as infrared\, ultraviolet or X-Rays\, to understand the different properties of paintings. \nPhysics students from the University of Bath are holding an event in the CLORE learning space\, from 11am to 4pm 9th April\, on how science is used to detect art forgeries. There will be activities suitable for all ages\, so come along to find out more and see the science in action! \nFREE DROP IN WORKSHOP  – NO BOOKING REQUIRED

SUMMARY:Holburne Open Jack Lewdjaw
DESCRIPTION:We are pleased to welcome Jack Lewdjaw  who is an artist and educator based in Bristol\, to Holburne Open. Over the next four weeks\, Jack will be exhibiting a series of works in the Andrew Brownsword Gallery on the University of Bath Campus\, as well as developing a series of new sculpture works live in the gallery (from the 8 of April). \n \nJack’s work is informed by his experiences working as a freelance graphic designer as well as his relationship to ideas around drawing in digital spaces. Recurring themes within his work include architectural and technological decay\, ruination\, and the architecture of public space from street view (particularly the vernacular design of shop fronts).\n \nWorks displayed include his ‘Border’ series (2019-2020) which incorporate border designs found within early editions of the Microsoft Word package\, and his ‘Digital drawings’ series (2022) which derive from experiments with digitally created gestural marks\, as the artist explores his relationship to drawing mediated through a computer and the clicks of a computer mouse. \n \nJack will also be working on a new series of sculptures in concrete as part of a residency in the space. The works are intended to explore a traditional process of casting concrete using a clay and wood box mould\, which Jack discovered through a British Pathe film (1960) about the method. The process was popularised by artists like William Mitchell with many concrete murals being executed in public spaces around the UK.\n \nThere will be a closing event\, with finalised sculptures\, on the 23 of April at 3pm. \n\nseam will also be displaying their work alongside Jack Lewdjaw. \nThe gallery is open from Wednesday to Saturday 11am to 3pm.

SUMMARY:Holburne Open Gerry Eaton
DESCRIPTION:The series is called From Here to The Hawkstone and was made in 2020. I made repetitive walks from my home in rural West Oxfordshire to The Hawkstone – a Neolithic standing stone about a mile from my home. The work was made sequentially\, from foraged dyestuffs\,  each piece representing a month of the year. Along side each piece are my diary observations of each month. \nThe idea behind the project that I am working on is to investigate the area/ community where I live and then present my findings back to the community through art. I spent  several months researching last year and interviewing people who had worked on the land locally. I was lucky enough to interview a 95 year old land girl  who had come down to area  from Sheffield after the  blitz\, also a weaver from the local mill which closed 42 years ago. The local museum let me have a piece of tweed that was made at the mill which I am currently incorporating into some work. \nGERRY EATON

SUMMARY:The Tudors: Passion\, Power & Politics ⭐⭐⭐⭐
DESCRIPTION:In our opening exhibition of 2022\, The Tudors: Passion\, Power and Politics\, you will come face-to-face with the five Tudor monarchs – Henry VII\, Henry VIII\, Edward VI\, Mary I and Elizabeth I – who\, to this day\, remain some of the most familiar figures in English history; not least because these instantly recognisable portraits have preserved their likenesses for five centuries. \nThe Times ⭐⭐⭐⭐\nThe Telegraph ⭐⭐⭐⭐ \nYou can book in advance here\, or you can also just purchase tickets on arrival at the Museum. \nThis focused exhibition\, developed in partnership with the National Portrait Gallery and National Museums Liverpool\, includes some of the most iconic images in British painting\, including the ‘Darnley’ and ‘Armada’ portraits of Elizabeth I. Several of the works have never been shown outside London\, including a portrait of Jane Seymour after Hans Holbein the Younger and the highly unusual Sir Henry Unton (c.1558–1596) portrait\, which was painted posthumously and charts key moments in his life and death. \nThrough the portraits\, the exhibition explores this torrid period of religious conflict and political intrigue\, the legacies of which continue to reverberate through contemporary British life. It features vivid likenesses of many of the most significant figures of the time\, including Sir Francis Drake and Sir Walter Raleigh\, Thomas Cranmer\, Thomas More\, William Cecil and Thomas Cromwell\, whose fame has recently been revived by Hilary Mantel’s Wolf Hall trilogy. \nBeginning with the oldest painting in the NPG’s collection\, a 1505 portrait of the first Tudor king\, Henry VII\, the exhibition follows the family’s successive generations and their courtiers\, including the Protestant spymaster Sir Francis Walsingham (c.1585) and Nicholas Hilliard’s dashing miniature portrait of Sir Walter Raleigh (c.1585). \nImage credit: Queen Elizabeth I by Unknown artist\, circa 1588 © National Portrait Gallery\, London \nThis exhibition at the Holburne Museum is kindly supported by The Tudors: Passion\, Power and Politics Exhibition Supporters Circle: \nDr and Mrs Martin Clarke\nEva and Van DuBose \n \nWith additional support from the Holburne Museum’s Director’s Circle\, Patrons\, and Friends. \nTickets & Booking  \nBefore you visit please read our Museum Charter and Q&A at our coronavirus page.\nYour entry ticket Includes all of our Special exhibitions\, temporary displays in addition to our permanent collection. Valid all day for the date you book and not timed (you can enter any time during our normal opening hours). There are no timed entry tickets.\nYou can book in advance here\, or you can also just purchase tickets on arrival at the Museum.\nLast Admissions to the Museum is 4.30pm.\nOnce you have booked online you will receive a confirmation email. Please show this on your mobile or smart device on entry or print it off at home and show on entry. \nWe look forward to seeing you.

SUMMARY:People Make Museums
DESCRIPTION:People Make Museums is a celebration of creativity and the importance of people in museums. \nPeople bring stories\, memories\, lived experience and ways of seeing which constantly reinvigorate and challenge museums and their collections. It is people that make museums relevant. \nYou can book in advance here\, or you can also just purchase tickets on arrival at the Museum. \nThe sculptures in this exhibition aim to capture some of these complex\, personal moments of connection; the fleeting conversations\, sudden revelations\, unspoken thoughts\, sensations and feelings evoked by museum spaces and objects. \nThese are the experiences which shape our relationships with museums and art galleries – and in turn shape and inform what museums are and can be. \nShowcasing over 20 sculptural pieces selected by a panel of colleagues from the Arts\, Health and Museum sectors these artworks have been specially made for this exhibition. Contributors range from those who have participated in Bath Museums’ partnership Pathways to Wellbeing creative groups as well as museum staff\, volunteers\, professional artists and creative facilitators who are part of this growing creative community. \nSupported by\nand St John’s\, Bath \nTickets & Booking  \nBefore you visit please read our Museum Charter and Q&A at our coronavirus page.\nYour entry ticket Includes all of our Special exhibitions\, temporary displays in addition to our permanent collection. SUMMARY:Mick Peter: Old Ghosts
DESCRIPTION:Old Ghosts  is an exhibition of new work by Glasgow-based artist\, Mick Peter. Old Ghosts takes a wry and affectionate look at the idea of history as an industry. In several surprising interventions\, inside and outside the Holburne Museum\, visitors will encounter amusing tableaux which appear to be cartoons that have come to life. \nYou can book in advance here\, or you can also just purchase tickets on arrival at the Museum. \nOld Ghosts creates a narrative trail through the Museum and its Garden that humorously critiques the conventions of heritage sites. Outside the gallery\, there will be what appears to be an archaeological dig complete with a half-buried “Roman” road\, although the artefacts being revealed are somewhat ‘wrong’. Meanwhile\, on the Holburne’s famous facade – known to Jane Austen as the Sydney Hotel\, and more recently to fans of the Bridgerton TV series as the home of Lady Danbury – facing Great Pulteney Street\, a hapless signwriter desperately tries to complete his task of refreshing the Museum’s signage. \nInside the Museum a screen test takes place in the ballroom\, with the backdrop a drawn (everything is derived from Peter’s drawings) version of a Georgian room but with camera operators\, runners\, take-away coffees\, and the other paraphernalia of a film set. Here\, Mick Peter is playfully riffing on the Holburne’s role as both an art gallery and a film location\, along with the history of Bath and\, in so doing\, is contemplating a new way of thinking about the Museum in the 21st-century. \nSupported by: \n \n  \n  \n  \n  \nImage credit: Studio Selfie (c) Mick Peter \nTickets & Booking\nBefore you visit please read our Museum Charter and Q&A at our coronavirus page.\nYour entry ticket Includes all of our Special exhibitions\, temporary displays in addition to our permanent collection.
