SUMMARY:Nalini Malani: My Reality is Different
DESCRIPTION:Book your tickets in advance or pay on arrival. If you’re a member there’s no need to pre-book.\nYour General Entry ticket includes entry to all exhibitions and the collection \nNational Gallery Contemporary Fellowship with Art Fund\nNew video animations featuring famous paintings in the National Gallery and the Holburne Museum\, Bath\, have been created by Nalini Malani\, the first artist to receive the National Gallery’s Contemporary Fellowship\, supported by Art Fund.   \nWith a fierce commitment to pushing boundaries and experimenting and exploring the possibilities of the moving image\, Nalini Malani has created a deep black exhibition space in the Holburne Museum\, Bath\, with one monumental artwork\, My Reality is Different.   \nEncompassing over 40 meters of wall\, the 25 striking new animations immerse the viewer in a panorama of nine large video projections\, played in a continuous loop. These animations are based on an idiosyncratic selection by Malani from famous paintings in the National Gallery and the Holburne Museum.   \nPictures by Caravaggio and Bronzino in the National Gallery’s collection\, and by Jan van der Venne and Johann Zoffany in the collection of the Holburne Museum\, Bath\, have inspired the animations in an exhibition which\, following its opening at the Holburne Museum\, Bath\, on 7 October 2022\, moves to the National Gallery next year.    \nClassical stories have been transformed by playful hand-drawn animations\, made using an iPad\, that reveal and conceal different aspects of the paintings in both collections to rediscover them from an alternative\, and critical point of view.   \nBy overlapping the nine video projections and showing the animations of different length in a loop without syncing them\, Malani has chosen to go beyond the Western linear view. As a result\, there is an endless change of juxtapositions and interaction of the images\, allowing the spectator to co-create their own meanings.   \nEmbodying the role of the artist as a social activist\, Malani puts the Western Canon under pressure in these animations where traditional art history and its European figures are no longer the only source of meaning. Learn more about the ideas behind the show with this short film made especially for the exhibition. \nDon’t miss Up Late on Friday 25 November in partnership with the National Gallery\, Art as Social Activism!\nTake part in creating a large-scale mixed-media artwork inspired by Nalini Milani’s My Reality is Different. Respond to and reinterpret the Holburne ’s 18th-century collection\, challenging perceptions of gender\, nationality\, empire\, and colonialism. \nExhibition organised by the National Gallery and the Holburne Museum: \n       \nThe National Gallery’s Contemporary Arts Programme is sponsored by Hiscox. \nNalini Malani\, My Reality is Different\, 2022 © Nalini Malani

SUMMARY:UP LATE - Thinking Outside the Frame – Women in the Arts
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a series of hands-on\, interactive activities looking at the presence and absence of women from the arts. How can the arts help us tell our stories? \nJoin us for an evening of sharing and discovery\, that will include a scavenger hunt\, banner-making\, open discussions\, and an imagined dinner party! \nEnjoy FREE entry to our Collection Galleries \nDrinks and DJ  in the Garden cafe \n5pm – 9pm (Gallery last admission 8.30pm) \n

SUMMARY:Richard Smith: Kites (on display at the Edge)
DESCRIPTION:Watch the Museum’s Director\, Chris Stephens\, give a tour of the exhibition. \n  \nRichard Smith was one of the most innovative and celebrated painters in Britain in the 1960s and 1970s. Seen as the father of Pop Art\, a mentor to numerous artists including David Hockney\, he repeatedly sought to reinvent the language of painting. This exhibition is timed to coincide with the publication of the first major book on the artist: Richard Smith: Artworks 1954–2013\, published by the Estate of Francis Bacon Publishing in association with Thames & Hudson \nSmith’s most innovative and ambitious paintings were initially made locally in the 1970s at his studio in the village of East Tytherton\, near Chippenham. With these\, Smith released the canvas from its stretcher to make loose\, unframed works that he dubbed Kites. The most dynamic of these were removed from the wall\, hanging instead from the ceiling above viewers’ heads. One of these¸ The Shuttle\, was first shown at Smith’s major retrospective exhibition at the Tate Gallery in 1975. Hanging 7 metres high and 9 metres long\, it must be one of the largest paintings ever made in the UK. We are excited to be presenting this major work to UK audiences for the first time since that important occasion. \nThe Edge is open from 11am to 4pm Wednesday to Saturday\, admission is free. \nDon’t miss Richard Smith: Intersections at Flowers Gallery from 16 November. \nWith the support of: \n         \nImage: Richard Smith The Shuttle\, 1975\, courtesy Flowers Gallery

SUMMARY:Rodin - Degas: Impressionist Sculpture
DESCRIPTION:Book your tickets in advance or pay on arrival. If you’re a member there’s no need to pre-book. \nYour General Entry ticket includes entry to all exhibitions and the collection \nThis exhibition brings together major sculptures by two of the towering figures in modern European art: Auguste Rodin (1840-1917) and Edgar Degas (1834-1917). It focuses on the artists’ representation of the human body and their expression of its energy through both dynamic poses and static poise. Both artists show human figures in energetic movement\, stationary or poised for imminent movement. In every work\, the energy contained in the body is powerfully conveyed. \n  \nWhile Rodin worked primarily in plaster and Degas in wax\, all of the works in the exhibition will be bronze\, ensuring a continuity in the material to emphasise the variation in the description of the body. Both artists used degrees of abstraction to create a realistic sense of the figure in space and both achieved a varied\, textured surface to ensure the play of light across the sculptures added to their expression of energy and dynamism. The focus on the transient body and these expressive surfaces can be seen as the closest sculpture comes to the qualities of Impressionism in painting. \nGenerously supported by:\n\n \nWith Additional Support from: \n \nAnd The Rodin-Degas: Impressionist Sculpture Supporters Circle:\nStuart and Bianca Roden\nMichael and Yvonne Uva \nThe Holburne Director’s Circle\, Patrons and Friends \nLittle dancer aged fourteen\, Edgar Degas\, 1922\, UEA 2\, Sainsbury Centre

SUMMARY:Elisabeth Frink: Strength & Sensuality
DESCRIPTION:Book your tickets in advance or pay on arrival. If you’re a member there’s no need to pre-book. \nYour General Entry ticket includes entry to all exhibitions and the collection \nIn 2019 the Holburne received a bequest of 35 objects from the estate of sculptor Dame Elisabeth Frink (1930–1993). The artworks included sculptures\, drawings\, etchings\, and screen prints. A new exhibition will celebrate this important acquisition by showcasing a selection of the works. \nFeaturing themes such as storytelling\, animals\, humour and violence\, Elisabeth Frink: Strength & Sensuality is the Holburne’s first opportunity to show a selection of Dame Elisabeth Frink’s bronzes and works on paper. The 11 works included depict her unique take on some of the most loved and well-known tales from Chaucer’s The Canterbury Tales and classical Greek mythology\, in her Children of the Gods series of etchings. Together\, they examine an almost unknown\, or indeed forgotten\, but important aspect of Frink’s career\, as a storyteller and printmaker. Visitors will also be able to see a number of Frink’s best-known motifs\, winged figures\, male torsos and horses. \nElisabeth Frink: Strength & Sensuality is devised in collaboration with a Bath Spa University student\, Harriet Rhodes\, as part of the Holburne’s partnership with universities in the area and our commitment to helping people develop a career in the arts. \nCourtesy of Beaux Arts London \nImage: Herakles and the Lion’s Mask Etching with aquatint\, 1988\n© The Holburne Museum.
