SUMMARY:An Enlightened Heart
DESCRIPTION:Galliarda’s An Enlightened Heart project highlights the music and performing traditions of women in\nthe eighteenth-century.\nWith the inclusion of new pieces for early instruments commissioned by group members from young female composers (Jenni Pinnock and Rebecca Rowe) connect with the developing tradition of female composers today.\nWe aim to raise awareness of the music\, and the difficult position women had as independent composers\, multi-instrumentalists and singers in the age of the enlightenment. \nThe quartet features the young recorder player Kate Allsop who recently completed her graduate studies at the Birmingham Conservatoire gaining a first and winning the course prize. Kate is joined by the seasoned performers Sara Stowe (harpsichordist and singer)\, Ibi Azziz (viol) and Matthew Spring (lutes and viols).

SUMMARY:Holburne Gardeners' Questions
DESCRIPTION:The Holburne Museum welcomes gardeners to a special occasion: Gardeners’ Question Time. This will be a rare opportunity to pick the brains of our panel of experienced gardeners: \n\nJane Fearnley-Whittingstall\, a garden designer and author; her books include Peonies – The Imperial Flower and The Garden\, an English Love Affair. Jane has also won two gold medals at the Chelsea Flower Show.\nDerry Watkins of Special Plants Nursery\, author of two books on greenhouse gardening. She has introduced many plants from her plant collecting trips to South Africa and elsewhere\, resulting in a collection of unusual plants from all over the world.\nAntony Young\, an experienced gardener and designer.\n\nThe combined knowledge of our experts should be sufficient to give worthwhile advice on almost every horticultural question imaginable. It promises to be a highly informative and enjoyable evening and a glass of wine is included.

SUMMARY:Floral Needle Roll inspired by a 19th Century Needlebook: Royal School of Needlework Partnership Class
DESCRIPTION:Floral Needle Roll inspired by a 19th Century Needlebook: Royal School of Needlework Partnership  Class\nSaturday 11th March    10am – 4pm          £150 per person\n\n\n\n\n\nJoin RSN Tutor\, Deborah Wilding to learn how to create your own version of a beautiful\, yet practical Needle Roll\, made nearly 200 years ago! During the day you will also have the chance to view and learn about the history of this wonderful object and many others from the museum’s unique collection and exhibitions. \nLike the original piece\, your needle roll will include spaces between silk shaded flowers for needles size 7-12 to be stored. You will be stitching on white cotton fabric and when complete\, a layer of wadding will be added to the back. The needle roll is then made up once the embroidery elements are complete with a backing fabric and a bias edge with ribbon closure to tie shut. \nDuring the class an expert RSN Tutor will teach you all the needed hand embroidery techniques to complete this stunning piece. Some experience of embroidery would be useful\, but all aspects of the design will be covered during the class and a full instruction booklet will be included in the kit to enable you to complete the design at home. This class is suitable for beginners and more experienced stitchers. \n\n\n\n\nThe class cost includes all materials and your kit comprises everything you require to complete the project. You may like to bring your own embroidery scissors and magnifiers if you need them\, but you will be able to borrow ring frames and scissors on the day. \nThis event includes entrance to the museum and an embroidery kit.

SUMMARY:Reimagining the Holburne’s Collection: Lab 1 - AI and You
DESCRIPTION:Can you reveal new stories about the museum’s collection? \nArtificial Intelligence (AI) is being used to label the world around us. We’ll discuss how curators label objects now\, and how AI is changing access to cultural collections online. You’ll widen the stories we tell about our collection by making your own classifications and understand how your way of seeing changes how the item is presented. \nNew content created will be shared on the museum’s Reimagining the Holburne’s collection website. \nThere are no specific skills required for this Lab. Each Lab is limited to 20 people aged 16 and over. SUMMARY:Alberta Whittle In Conversation with Curator Will Cooper
DESCRIPTION:Join artist Alberta Whittle In Conversation with curator Will Cooper for a discussion about the artist’s latest exhibition\, Dipping below a waxing moon\, the dance claims us for release. The conversation will take audiences on a journey to better understand the artist’s practice and her engagement with the Holburne. A relationship which started with an invitation to write an epitaph for the enslaved who lost their lives on the Ball’s Plantation and has culminated in Whittle’s first commission in a UK museum. DESCRIPTION:Book your tickets in advance or pay on arrival. If you’re a member there’s no need to pre-book. \nYour General Entry ticket includes entry to all exhibitions and the collection \nListen to Alberta Whittle’s recording of ‘Spell for Release’ and explore her suggested reading list for adults and children \nFresh from representing Scotland at the Venice Biennale\, Alberta Whittle (b.1980) will present a suite of newly commissioned sculptures across the Holburne Museum’s site and grounds\, as well as a series of new text-based works across Bath. \nThe exhibition\, Whittle’s first in a public museum\, will continue themes known in her practice including post-colonial healing\, pleasure\, and hospitality\, each manifested through her prism of love\, compassion\, and kindness. Previous projects have looked to explore more recent historical events including the Windrush scandal\, and the challenges faced by healthcare workers during the early days of the coronavirus pandemic. SUMMARY:Illustrating the World: Woodcuts in the Age of Dürer
DESCRIPTION:Book your tickets in advance or pay on arrival. If you’re a member there’s no need to pre-book. \nYour General Entry ticket includes entry to all exhibitions and the collection \nThis is a rare opportunity to view the complete set of woodcuts known as The Great Passion\, produced by the most famed artist of the German Renaissance\, Albrecht Dürer (1471-1528). During the 15th-century the woodcut technique became highly practiced throughout Europe\, mainly in the form of cheap and mass-produced decorative or devotional images\, made in monastic workshops or by independent craftsmen\, including playing-cards makers. \nWith  the spread of the movable-type press in the second half of the 15th-century\, woodcuts became the preferred means of illustrating books. The vast variety of texts being printed required artists to create brand new iconographies. The publication of the lavishly illustrated Nuremberg Chronicle in 1493 set a new standard for illustrated books both for its quality and production process. Publishers started hiring renowned artists to devise iconographic programs. Young Dürer was an apprentice at the Nuremberg workshop while this masterpiece was being produced\, possibly contributing to it. \nJust three years later\, Dürer started working on his Great Passion cycle. He was the first artist in history to devise\, create and publish an illustrated book\, pushing the limits of a quintessentially linear art to create vividly animated scenes. With its rise in status\, the woodcut was soon recognized as a powerful tool to reach a wide public\, and evolved into a medium used for civic promotion\, political and religious propaganda\, and the sharing of ideas and information. \nDon’t Miss our lunchtime talk 1pm 16 March Durer and the Power of the Printed Image \nGenerously supported by: \nThe Schroder Family\n \nImage: Albrecht Dürer\, The Last Supper\, from Passio Domini Nostri Jesu (known as the Great Passion)\, Nuremberg: 1511 © The Schroder Collection.
