SUMMARY:Lucie Rie: The Adventure of Pottery
DESCRIPTION:Book your tickets in advance or pay on arrival. Members are granted free entry. \nYour General Entry ticket includes entry to all exhibitions and the Collection Galleries \n“Sheer pleasure everywhere you look”\nAli Smith\, The New Statesman \nThis major exhibition celebrates Lucie Rie (1902–1995)\, one of the most accomplished and influential potters of the twentieth century. Featuring work produced across six decades\, this display follows the evolution of Rie’s distinguished career\, from some of her earliest ceramics made in her native Vienna to striking pieces from the last years of her life. \nRie’s escape from Nazi persecution to Britain in 1938 had a significant impact on her life and work. She established herself as an independent female potter in a male-dominated field\, working with the likes of Hans Coper and Bernard Leach. Her extensive technical knowledge and experimentation with glazes and firing to create different colours\, textures\, and effects\, garnered widespread admiration and left a lasting impression on an entire generation of British ceramicists. \nLucie Rie: The Adventure of Pottery is organised by Kettle’s Yard\, University of Cambridge and MIMA\, part of Teesside University\, in association with The Holburne Museum\, Bath. \nGenerously supported by the AKO Foundation and The Headley Trust \n \n   \nImage Credit: Bowl\, 1977 ©Estate of Lucie Rie

SUMMARY:SOLD OUT - Woodchester Park House garden & Kiftsgate Court Gardens
DESCRIPTION:Please inform us of any dietary requirements by emailing us at friends@holburne.org upon purchasing your ticket. \n  \nCourtesy of the Holburne Museum’s Friends Committee\, we are offering private tours of two spectacular gardens. \nWoodchester Park House is a large Victorian Gothic building which has existed in its present form since 1874. When the Bidwells arrived in 1995\, there was little or no garden. Several sheep and a couple of geese were grazing up to the windows of the house in around 3 acres of grass and tangles. In the subsequent near 30 years the Bidwells have transformed this area\, now wholly under cultivation. \nFor much of the summer there is a mass of colour: there are herbaceous beds surrounding the lawn and further beds on the walk round to the pond. There is a small orchard with wildflower meadow and another pond. Leading from the pond to the house is an avenue of yews. Adjoining the house there is a terrace with roses and colourful shrubs. Below the main lawn there is a vegetable garden and area for cutting flowers (including a number of rose beds). There is a woodland area with a range of shade loving plants and in late May a mass of alliums. \nFrom the Bidwells we go north to Kiftsgate Court gardens\, the work of three generations of women gardeners and garden designers: Heather Muir\, Diany Binny and Anne Chambers. It was Muir who\nbegan the transformation of the paved formal garden into something more fluid and naturalistic. From the 1950s\, Diany Binny’s influence began to be felt\, with sculptures commissioned\, a semi-circular pool installed in the lower garden and Kiftsgate opening to the public for the first time. Current owner Anne Chambers has continued with the idea of “evolution not revolution” when it comes to Kiftsgate’s development\, with one of her notable changes being the conversion of a tennis court area into the water garden. \nKiftsgate today is really a series of different garden-spaces\, with formal borders (including the famous Kiftsgate rose border) and plantings\, a wildflower meadow\, orchard\, a sunken garden\, terraces as well as water features and ponds. \nTicket cost includes return private coach transport\, arrival refreshments and a private tour of Woodchester Park House gardens\, entry to Kiftsgate\, and a delicious 2-course lunch at the Kiftsgate Tea Rooms. Depart from The Holburne at 9am\, aiming to be back in Bath by 6.30pm.

SUMMARY:So long as breath controls my being: Love and Marriage Portraiture in Renaissance Europe
DESCRIPTION:Join guest curator Lucy Whitaker for an evening of discovery and exploration of marriage portraiture in the Renaissance. \nThe social and political implications of wedlock\, its rituals and ceremonies\, and the way these aspects interacted with the fine and decorative arts\, will be underpinned by an ultimately elusive and current question: how to convey deep affection between two people? \nLucy Whitaker is former Senior Curator of Paintings at The Royal Collection and previously Curator of Christ Church Picture Gallery in Oxford and Research Assistant at the National Gallery. \nImage Credit:\nGiovanni Battista Moroni\, Bust Portrait\nof a Young Man with an Inscription\, about 1560\,\noil on canvas. SUMMARY:SOLD OUT - Sudeley Castle Day Trip
DESCRIPTION:Please inform us of any dietary requirements by emailing us at friends@holburne.org upon purchasing your ticket. \n  \nCourtesy of the Holburne Museum’s Friends Committee\, we are offering a private walking tour of the amazing castle at Sudeley. \nSudeley’s origins date to a 10th century Saxon manor house\, in a region that was both agriculturally and ecclesiastically rich. Much later\, it was owned for a time and lived in by the dashing Thomas Seymour\, brother of Jane Seymour\, Henry VIIIs third wife. Sudeley went on to marry the widowed Katherine Parr\, Henry’s sixth and final wife\, which explains why Sudeley has the distinction of being the only privately-owned castle in the country with a Queen buried in its grounds. \nMuch of what the visitor sees today is an intriguing mix of Tudor and Victorian-Gothic\, the latter a result of the fact that like many other English houses\, Sudeley was rescued by “new money”\, in this instance the Dent brothers\, of glove fame (and more importantly fortune!)\, who acquired the castle in 1837. Sir Gilbert Scott was employed to re-build parts of the castle\, and interiors were “Gothicized”\, as was the fashion in the mid 19th century. Arguably the most handsome room is the Library\, with Elizabethan tapestry and an impressive fireplace. \nThe glorious gardens are a testament largely to Emma Dent\, wife of John Dent who inherited Sudeley from his unmarried bachelor uncles. There are actually 10 separate gardens in all\, including a Knot Garden\, The White Garden\, a Herb Garden\, and the centrepiece Queens Garden\, where more than 80 varieties of rose are planted. \nTicket cost includes private return coach transport\, arrival refreshments\, entry to the castle\, a light lunch and private walking tour of the gardens and castle exterior. Depart from The Holburne at 9am\, aiming to be back in Bath by 6.30pm.

SUMMARY:Jann Haworth & Liberty Blake: Work In Progress
DESCRIPTION:This seven-panel mural depicting 130 women from British history and culture was commissioned by the National Portrait Gallery as part of a three-year project to enhance female representation in its collection. \nThe mural\, by Jann Haworth and Liberty Blake\, was inspired by the absence of women in the album cover for the Beatles’ Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band\, which Haworth co-created in 1967. It draws together many stencilled depictions of cultural figures – some never before represented at the gallery – into a single image.  \nWe were delighted to collaborate on the mural through a series of workshops with our Pathways to Wellbeing participants\, led by Haworth and Blake on Zoom from their home in Salt Lake City\, Utah. Each participant proposed a number of women and then produced a stencilled portrait of one with acrylic paints and paper\, many of which are based on paintings or photographs from the National Portrait Galleries collection.  \nThe mural’s title links it to a wider\, on-going project of Haworth’s and Blake’s. \nThe original collaged work can be seen at the National Portrait Gallery. \nParticipating Pathways to Wellbeing artists:\nGuinevere Lewis\nCaroline Spicer\nWendy Harrison\nSarah Dymer\nIan Roberts\nJoanne Dyson\nAnna-Louise Highley\nMaggy Mark\nXid\nKaren Cokayne\nSridevi\nO. SUMMARY:STRAVIG – an Installation at the Holburne Museum Grounds
DESCRIPTION:This sculptural piece is a project born out of curiosity and exploration in how people interact with art and nature – a project which originally began through practising metalwork and welding skills. Its concept came from the collaboration between Josh Nicoll and Susie Beare\, and was then designed by Josh. The sculpture itself was built by Josh with assistance from Susie. \n  \nThe installation will be located at the rear of the Museum grounds\, next to the Garden Cafe terrace. \nReach the installation’s designers on Instagram:\nJosh Nicoll\nSusie Beare \nOr via their website:\nwww.redfoxentertainment.co.uk

SUMMARY:CANCELLED - Michael Simpson in conversation with Mark Wallinger
DESCRIPTION:*Due to unforeseen circumstances this talk has been cancelled. We are working to refund all ticket buyers via their original method of payment. \n  \nTo coincide with the first museum survey of his works on paper\, we are delighted to announce that Michael Simpson will be in conversation with one of his greatest admirers\, the artist Mark Wallinger.\nSimpson’s exhibition reflects his life-long interrogation of the mechanics of painting and his obsession with the iniquities of religion. Mark Wallinger\, one of the UK’s most celebrated artists\, is similarly concerned with ideas of power\, authority\, artifice and illusion. \nWallinger won the Turner Prize in 2007\, having represented the UK at the Venice Biennale in 2001 and produced the first sculpture for the Fourth Plinth in Trafalgar Square.

SUMMARY:Day Trip to Cerney House & Gardens and Barnsley House - Sold Out
DESCRIPTION:This event has now sold out \n  \nPlease inform us of any dietary requirements by emailing us at friends@holburne.org.\nCourtesy of the Holburne Museum’s Friends Committee\, we are offering private guided tours of two superb gardens. \nIn the morning we will visit Cerney House Gardens\, near Cheltenham. Cerney House was built around 1660\, subsequently remodelled in the Georgian manner\, with further alterations in the 18th and 19th centuries. Current owners\, the Angus family\, acquired the property in 1983. The heart of the garden is its Victorian walled garden with greenhouse and bothy\, and was once described by Country Living magazine as “what most people spire to in their gardens and few achieve”. Herbaceous borders are packed with old-fashioned varieties and surrounded by roses and climbing plants. There is also a kitchen garden\, wild flower bank and woodlands. \nBarnsley House was once the home of famous garden designer and writer\, Rosemary Verey\, and she created what remains to this day a classic example of an ‘English country garden’\, with its famous Laburnum Walk (which should be at its prime at the time of our visit) and several knot gardens. There are also extensive kitchen gardens (inspired by those at Chateau Villandry in the Loire Valley) which supply the hotel now occupying the main house. We will be shown around the gardens by head gardener\, Jennifer Danbury. \nTicket cost includes return private coach transport\, entry and private guided tour of both gardens\, arrival refreshments at Cerney House and an excellent two-course lunch at The Boot pub adjoining Barnsley House. Depart from the Holburne Museum at 9am\, returning at 5.30pm.

SUMMARY:Painted Love: Renaissance Marriage Portraits
DESCRIPTION:Book your tickets in advance or pay on arrival. Members are granted free entry. \nYour General Entry ticket includes entry to all exhibitions and the Collection Galleries. \nThe Times ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ “it tugs the heartstrings and stirs the loins”\nThe Guardian ⭐⭐⭐⭐ \nThis lavish exhibition explores the role of portraiture in the process of marriage in Renaissance Europe. Marriage portraits not only documented the legal union of spouses\, capturing that key moment in the sitters’ lives\, intimate and personal as well as public and formal\, but also celebrated the union of families\, their wealth\, power and land\, and the forging of political alliances. \nPainted Love: Renaissance Marriage Portraits will explore the way marriage portraiture reflected the complex politics of fifteenth and sixteenth century Europe. Wedlock was often the culmination of years of negotiations\, with portraits of eligible women and men being in demand and circulated from an early age. The show will also consider the combination between idealism and realism in one likeness. In addition to paintings\, the exhibition includes objects associated with the rituals of marriage: love tokens\, rings\, gifts\, and commemorative tableware. \nThe exhibition includes prestigious loans from the National Gallery\, the British Museum\, the Royal Collection Trust\, the Ashmolean and the V&A\, alongside numerous works from important private collections. \nThis exhibition is made possible with a grant from the Weston Loan Programme with Art Fund \nSponsored by The Weiss Gallery and Agnews Gallery \nGenerously supported by:\nThe Tavolozza Foundation\nDr and Mrs Martin Clarke\nEva and Van DuBose\nThe Holburne Director’s Circle\, Patrons and Friends \n   \n          \n \nImage Credit: \n\nAlesso Baldovinetti\, about 1426 – 1499 \nPortrait of a Lady\, about 1465\nBought\, 1866 \n© The National Gallery\, London

SUMMARY:CANCELLED - Cosmo Fry and friends in conversation
DESCRIPTION:*Due to unforeseen circumstances this talk has been cancelled. We are working to refund all ticket buyers via their original method of payment. \n  \nCosmo Fry and friends will talk about his father\, the inventor and entrepreneur\, Jeremy Fry and his scheme to make art accessible to a wider public\, the subject of the exhibition Unlimited: Art for Everyone in the 1960s showing at the Assembly Rooms until 4 June. The founder of the Bath-based engineering firm\, Rotork\, Jeremy Fry was one of the most colourful characters of the 1960s. Renowned as an engineer\, he was also part of a glamorous avant-garde art scene that included such figures as\nDavid Hockney and The Beatles as well the artists with whom he worked under the Unlimited label. Unlimited was a company run from the basement of Fry’s home at Widcombe Manor from 1967 to 1969 which aimed to massproduce works of art to make them available to a much wider audience.\nJoin us to hear about a long-forgotten chapter in Bath’s rich cultural history.

SUMMARY:Michael Simpson: Drawing towards painting - selected works on paper
DESCRIPTION:Book your tickets in advance or pay on arrival. Members are granted free entry. \nYour General Entry ticket includes entry to all exhibitions and the Collection Galleries. \nWinner of the prestigious John Moores Painting Prize\, Michael Simpson\, who lives and works locally\, has been the subject of solo exhibitions at major galleries and museums in London\, Berlin\, and Shanghai\, and his work is in many public and private collections including Tate. \nThis exhibition is the first to focus exclusively on the artist’s work on paper\, exploring Simpson’s approach to drawing as a route to what a painting might be. Made in a range of different media on a variety of materials\, these drawings reveal how Simpson’s ideas emerge and grow over time. His primary concern is with ‘the mechanics of painting’. He says\, ‘despite the subjective references in my work\, I believe a painting must move beyond its subject and\, for me\, formal considerations are paramount’. \nThe display will reflect Simpson’s career-long interest in certain images\, in particular the Leper Squint\, the Confessional\, and the Bench\, each reflecting his impassioned belief in ‘the infamy of religious history’. \nIn association with Southern and Partners. \nGenerously supported by Hiroko and Jim Sherwin \n  \nWith additional support from Art’Us Collectors’ Collective\, Holburne’s Contemporary Programme Donors\, Director’s Circle\, Patrons and Friends \n  \nConfessional Drawing\n2019\nInk\, gouache\, French chalk\, oil paint on paper
