SUMMARY:Lubaina Himid: Lost Threads
DESCRIPTION:Book your tickets in advance or pay on arrival. Members are granted free entry. \nYour General Entry ticket includes entry to all exhibitions and the Collection Galleries. \n  \nBorn in Zanzibar in 1954\, Lubaina Himid is a British artist who has dedicated her four-decades-long career to uncovering marginalised and silenced histories\, figures\, and cultural expressions. \nIn a practice that includes paintings\, prints\, drawings and installations\, she has addressed the histories and legacies of colonialism and slavery and engages with political questions and artistic traditions from the eighteenth century to the present day. \nWeaving and flowing across the front façade and around the permanent collections\, Lubaina Himid’s Lost Threads will see 400 metres of vibrant Dutch wax fabric transform the spaces of the Holburne Museum. \nReflecting the movement of the oceans and rivers that have been used to transport cotton\, yarn and enslaved people throughout history\, Lost Threads traces the paradoxes of textile production and circulation by engaging with its material implications. \nThe Holburne Future Collective interviewed Lubaina Himid about her work at the Holburne and young people in the arts. Watch the video here \n  \nPrincipal sponsor:  \n \nGenerously supported by The Garcia Family Foundation and The Norie Trust \nJohn Ellerman Foundation supports Holburne Museum’s Curator of Contemporary Art \n \nWith additional funding from supporters of Holburne Museum’s Contemporary Programme:\nRoland and Sophie Rudd\nFrancesca Beauman and James Bobin\nSir Ian and Mercedes Stoutzker\nJ.P Marland Charitable Trust \n  \nImage Credit: Lubaina Himid\, Lost Threads\, 2024\, Dutch wax print fabric. SUMMARY:Celebrating Miss Biffin: A conversation with Alison Lapper
DESCRIPTION:  \nWest country artist Sarah Biffin excelled as a professional painter by challenging the norms of Georgian society\, which restricted autonomy and financial independence for disabled women. In conversation with art historians Emma Rutherford and Ellie Smith\, the artist Alison Lapper will share her experience as a disabled woman artist 150 years later. \nLapper was born with phocomelia\, the same condition as Biffin\, who she describes as a “formidable artist and a formidable character… a strong\, stubborn\, singleminded human being”.

SUMMARY:SOLD OUT - The Hidden Treasures of Sydney Gardens
DESCRIPTION:Susana Parker\, archaeologist and heritage expert\, recently discovered a Roman sarcophagus in the gardens around the Holburne Museum\, as part of a Heritage Lottery-funded project. Susana and Wendy Powney\, technology consultant\, will talk about the forgotten histories of Sydney Gardens and how they are working to protect the special treasures of the Grade II-listed pleasure grounds. \nOne of these treasures is the only remaining Georgian supper box in the UK – a precursor to public restaurants as we know them today\, and a unique part of the Holburne’s back story as a hotel and place of entertainment. \nJoin us over a glass of wine for a lively talk which will bring to life the fascinating history of Sydney Gardens and how we can appreciate what is left. \n*Ticket cost includes a glass of wine and nibbles. \nImage courtesy of Bath in Time

SUMMARY:Gwen John: Art and Life in London and Paris
DESCRIPTION:Book your tickets in advance or pay on arrival. Members are granted free entry. \nYour General Entry ticket includes entry to all exhibitions and the Collection Galleries. \n“A fascinating show reveals John’s radical side”\nMark Hudson\, The Independent \n“One of my shows of the year. John emerges as a soulful\, inventive\, brilliant presence.”\nWaldemar Januszczak\, The Times \nGwen John: Art and Life in London and Paris will bring together paintings\, watercolours\, drawings and sketches to chronologically trace Gwen John’s 40-year career. The exhibition will place her art in relation to the two cities where she chose to live and work: from her early years at the Slade School of Fine Art in London and subsequent training under James Abbott McNeill Whistler at the Académie Carmen in Paris\, to her permanent move to Paris in 1904 and the life she built as an artist there. \nThe exhibition will draw on new research into John’s connections to her contemporaries\, dispelling the myth that the artist was an eccentric recluse. It will also explore the relationship of her work to that of her brother\, Augustus John\, and Auguste Rodin – with whom she had a ten-year affair. \nCurated by Dr Alicia Foster\, in partnership with Pallant House Gallery\, Chichester and the Holburne Museum. \nExhibition sponsored by: \n \nLearning sponsor: \n \n  \n  \n  \nWith additional support from: \n \nThomas Gibson Esq and those\nwho wish to remain anonymous \nHolburne Director’s Circle\,\nPatrons and Friends \n\nOfficial Paint Partner: \n \nCerullian Blue\nLavender \nImage Credit: Gwen John (1876–1939)\, A Corner of the Artist’s Room in Paris (detail)\, oil on canvas\, 1907–09\, © Sheffield Museums Trust

SUMMARY:Sarah Biffin
DESCRIPTION:Book your tickets in advance or pay on arrival. Members are granted free entry. \nYour General Entry ticket includes entry to all exhibitions and the Collection Galleries. \nSarah Biffin (or Biffen)\, (1784—1850)\, also known by her married name Mrs. Wright\, was an artist working in the first half of the nineteenth century. This exhibition will be the first major museum exhibition to examine Biffin’s life and work. Her remarkable story has been largely overlooked by historians and we hope to correct this. \nBiffin was born with the condition “phocomelia”\, described on her baptism record as “born without arms and legs”. She went on to train as an artist\, using her mouth to draw\, sew\, write and paint watercolours in miniature. In her early twenties\, she was contracted to Mr Dukes\, who ran a travelling sideshow\, and her talents astonished the crowds who turned up to see her work. One such spectator was the wealthy and well-connected Earl of Morton\, who supported her in her quest to finesse her artistic skills. In her mid-twenties she began formal tuition with a miniature painter (William Marshall Craig) and at the Royal Academy Schools. From 1816 she set herself up as professional artist\, taking commissions from nobility and royalty\, including the young Queen Victoria. Biffin worked up until her death in 1850 and was assisted financially through an annuity purchased by a group of loyal friends. \nThe Holburne’s exhibition will present an incisive and comprehensive picture of Biffin with a discussion of her work within the context of her life and times. It will include portraits\, still lifes and ephemera relating to her career. \n\nThe Holburne Museum would like to thank Alison Lapper MBE\, Emma Rutherford\, and Ellie Smith. \n\n\nThis exhibition has been generously supported by an anonymous donor with additional support from the Holburne Director’s Circle\, Patrons and Friends. \n\nImage credit: Sarah Biffin (1784–1850)\, Self-portrait\, watercolour and gouache\non paper\, c.1842 © South West Heritage Trust and Somerset Council

SUMMARY:Or Nué Brooch inspired by Painted Love: Renaissance Marriage Portraits at the Holburne Museum Partnership Class with Royal School of Needlework
DESCRIPTION:Please note this is an onsite class which will run from 10am-4pm at the Holburne Museum\, Bath \n  \nImmerse yourself in late 15th century art and embroidery with our exclusive Or Nué class on Saturday 23 September inspired by Painted Love: Renaissance Marriage Portraits exhibition at the Holburne Museum\, Bath. \nThis class takes inspiration from the marriage portrait of Jakob Fugger and Sybilla Artz\, painted by Hans Burgkmair in 1498 and on display at the exhibition. https://collections.holburne.org/object-l2022-1 The lavishness of the couple’s embroidered attire\, which attests to their wealth and power\, has been captured with minute detail. \nRSN Tutor\, Matthew Cayton will teach this beautiful Or Nué design based on Sybilla’s embroidered cuff.  You will also learn how to create a stunning brooch from your motif. Or Nué is an ancient embroidery technique involving the couching of metal threads with fine coloured threads to produce shaded patterns and was popular in Europe when the painting was commissioned. \nYour kit will include Goldwork thread\, 5 shades of DMC embroidery thread on bobbins and Gutermann couching thread plus a selection of needles. The design will be hand painted on fabric. A full instruction booklet will be included in the kit to enable you to complete the design at home. This class is suitable for beginners and more experienced stitchers. \nThe class cost includes all materials and necessary equipment and your kit comprises everything you require to complete the project. You may like to bring your own embroidery scissors and magnifiers if you need them\, but you will be able to borrow ring frames and scissors on the day. \nThis event includes entrance to the museum and a chance to see the painting that inspired the class. You may also visit the rest of the exhibition at lunchtime or after the class until the museum closes at 5pm. \nJoining Instructions: \nRegistration commences at 9.45am. The class will be held in the Museum’s Clore Learning space\, situated on the ground floor. This space can be accessed from 9.45am via large white door\, on the right hand side of the building. \nBottled water will be provided for all attendees. It is recommended that you bring a packed lunch on the day to eat in the museum gardens or workshop space . The museum has an onsite café where attendees can purchase light refreshments and drinks. \nThe museum is fully accessible. Free parking is available to Blue Badge holders in the car park\, which is located directly next to the museum. (Please be advised that the car park paying machine only accepts coins.)

SUMMARY:Charlton Down House & Tetbury Day Trip
DESCRIPTION:Please inform us of any dietary requirements by emailing us at friends@holburne.org upon purchasing your ticket. \n  \nCourtesy of the Holburne Museum’s Friends Committee\, we are offering a fantastic opportunity to explore the gardens of Charlton Down House and Tetbury. \nCharlton Down House is owned by Neil and Julie Record. Previously the focus of the estate was equestrian-based and no real interest was taken in the maintenance of the buildings and gardens. Neil and Julie purchased Charlton Down with the intention of it being used as a family home\, a weekend and holiday break away from their busy lives in London. They have invested substantially in restoring the buildings and gardens. \nThey have developed large herbaceous borders\, a topiary garden\, planted a copse\, and have turned the old horse school into a walled garden providing vegetables and flowers to the family. They have also introduced rescued animals to Charlton Down\, retired show horses\, donkeys\, ponies\, and even chickens. \nFrom Charlton Down House\, we have a short drive to Tetbury for lunch at The Close Hotel. Afterwards there is free time to explore Tetbury itself – perhaps a visit to the beautiful Georgian Gothic St Mary’s church or some of the fabulous independent shops in the town. \nTicket cost includes return private coach transport\, arrival refreshments and home made cakes at Charlton Down House as well as an introductory talk\, lunch and free time to explore Tetbury. Departing the Holburne at 9am\, returning about 4.30pm.
