SUMMARY:The Holburne Quiz
DESCRIPTION:We are thrilled to announce that Howard Davies\, Holburne’s Quizmaster par excellence\, is kindly returning to Bath with a brand new quiz on matters cultural\, frivolous\, tantalising and arcane! Howard has been inspired by Bob Holness’s immortal Blockbusters phrase “I’ll have a ‘P’ please” – each quiz category begins with a ‘P’. So whether peoples’ passion is for politics\, pianos\, police\, Paris or people called Peter\, there should be pleasure and puzzlement partout. There will be picture rounds\, a ‘jeopardy’ round\, and if technology allows\, a musical round. Test your grey cells and bring out your funny bones for a delightful and convivial evening. \n*Tickets £35 each\, which includes the evening’s entertainment\, delicious wines\, soft drinks\, cheese and charcuterie.

SUMMARY:Gillian Lowndes: Radical Clay
DESCRIPTION:Book your tickets in advance or pay on arrival. Members are granted free entry. \nYour General Entry ticket includes entry to all exhibitions and the Collection Galleries. \n  \nOne of the art world’s best kept secrets\, we are thrilled to present the work of Gillian Lowndes to a wider audience. \nGillian Lowndes (1936-2010) was one of the most daring and original artists of the post-war period. Though she trained as a potter\, her work hovers between craft and fine art\, pottery and sculpture. Often incorporating found objects into her practice\, her unorthodox methods involved dipping materials in clay to be fired\, burying work in sand and destroying fired pieces with a hammer\, only to reassemble them again with ceramic mortar. \nFocusing on Lowndes’ work from the 1980s to the 2000s\, the exhibition showcases a small number of tabletop and wall pieces which reflect the breadth of her practice in the last decades of her career and demonstrates the radical ways in which she stretched and subverted ceramic practice. \nSupported by The Sunday Painter\n \n  \n  \n  \nOfficial Paint Partner: \n \n  \n  \n  \nGillian Lowndes\, Almost off the Wall\, 2001. SUMMARY:Lubaina Himid: Lost Threads
DESCRIPTION:Book your tickets in advance or pay on arrival. Members are granted free entry. \nYour General Entry ticket includes entry to all exhibitions and the Collection Galleries. \n  \nBorn in Zanzibar in 1954\, Lubaina Himid is a British artist who has dedicated her four-decades-long career to uncovering marginalised and silenced histories\, figures\, and cultural expressions. \nIn a practice that includes paintings\, prints\, drawings and installations\, she has addressed the histories and legacies of colonialism and slavery and engages with political questions and artistic traditions from the eighteenth century to the present day. \nWeaving and flowing across the front façade and around the permanent collections\, Lubaina Himid’s Lost Threads will see 400 metres of vibrant Dutch wax fabric transform the spaces of the Holburne Museum. \nReflecting the movement of the oceans and rivers that have been used to transport cotton\, yarn and enslaved people throughout history\, Lost Threads traces the paradoxes of textile production and circulation by engaging with its material implications. \nThe Holburne Future Collective interviewed Lubaina Himid about her work at the Holburne and young people in the arts. SUMMARY:Gwen John: Art and Life in London and Paris
DESCRIPTION:Book your tickets in advance or pay on arrival. Members are granted free entry. \nYour General Entry ticket includes entry to all exhibitions and the Collection Galleries. \n“A fascinating show reveals John’s radical side”\nMark Hudson\, The Independent \n“One of my shows of the year. John emerges as a soulful\, inventive\, brilliant presence.”\nWaldemar Januszczak\, The Times \nGwen John: Art and Life in London and Paris will bring together paintings\, watercolours\, drawings and sketches to chronologically trace Gwen John’s 40-year career. The exhibition will place her art in relation to the two cities where she chose to live and work: from her early years at the Slade School of Fine Art in London and subsequent training under James Abbott McNeill Whistler at the Académie Carmen in Paris\, to her permanent move to Paris in 1904 and the life she built as an artist there. \nThe exhibition will draw on new research into John’s connections to her contemporaries\, dispelling the myth that the artist was an eccentric recluse. It will also explore the relationship of her work to that of her brother\, Augustus John\, and Auguste Rodin – with whom she had a ten-year affair. \nCurated by Dr Alicia Foster\, in partnership with Pallant House Gallery\, Chichester and the Holburne Museum. \nExhibition sponsored by: \n \nLearning sponsor: \n \n  \n  \n  \nWith additional support from: \n \nThomas Gibson Esq and those\nwho wish to remain anonymous \nHolburne Director’s Circle\,\nPatrons and Friends \n\nOfficial Paint Partner: \n \nCerullian Blue\nLavender \nImage Credit: Gwen John (1876–1939)\, A Corner of the Artist’s Room in Paris (detail)\, oil on canvas\, 1907–09\, © Sheffield Museums Trust
