SUMMARY:Friends Trip to Wolfeton & Athelhampton in Dorset
DESCRIPTION:A repeat\, full day trip to see two of Dorset’s finest medieval properties. We will have private access and an exclusive tour of the interior of Wolfeton and a private tour of Athelhampton. \nWe arrive first at Wolfeton House (pictured above)\, a Grade 1 listed medieval and Elizabethan house\, whose original courtyard section dates back to 1480. Highlights include two magnificent early 16th century bastion towers\, fine pictures and furniture from the 17th century\, the Great Hall and perhaps the two most outstanding rooms in the Elizabethan wing. \nIn the afternoon we visit Athelhampton House\, a magnificent medieval property. The most impressive feature of the house is its Great Hall\, with its minstrels’ gallery\, armorial glass\, stunning ceiling of carved wooden beams and elaborate corbelling. In the gardens is one of Athelhampton’s most famous features\, its unique topiary Great Court of giant yew hedges and pyramid- shaped yew trees.  There are also water features aplenty – fountains\, lily ponds\, lakes – as well as statuary\, dovecotes\, walled “hidden gardens” and a magnificent cedar tree. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThe coach will leave the Museum promptly at 8.30am\, returning at about 6.30pm. Please complete booking form 3 in the Friends Summer Newsletter. The trip is being organised by Mark Hake.

SUMMARY:Friends Trip to Two Somerset Cottage Gardens
DESCRIPTION:A full day trip to two delightful cottage gardens in Somerset: Midney\, pictured above\, where we have exclusive access; and the renowned gardens established by Margery Fish at East Lambrook Manor. We will have an introduction at both properties and then be able to stroll round at our own pace.  There will be free time to make a few plant purchases at both Midney’s nursery and the Margery Fish Plant Nursery. \nIn the morning\, we first visit Midney\, where Dave Chase and Alison Houghton first dug ground in 2009. The gardens here are a series of linked\, but differentiated garden “spaces”\, defined by the extensive use of colour. From Midney\, we have a short drive for a light lunch (included) at the Rose & Crown pub which conveniently stands opposite East Lambrook Manor\, where we will spend the rest of the afternoon. Where Midney is a relatively “new” garden East Lambrook’s origins go back some eighty years and the gardens that a visitor will see today are essentially as they were at the time of Margery Fish. They comprise a loose\, informal design with areas given over to plants most ideally suited to local growing conditions. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThe coach will leave the Museum promptly at 9.00am\, returning at about 6.00pm. Please complete and return booking form 2 in the Friends Summer Newsletter. Please indicate any food allergies/ intolerances on the form\, and do allow us time to respond to your booking request\, thanks. The trip is being organised by Mark Hake

SUMMARY:Friends Trip: A Day at Bowood
DESCRIPTION:Bowood has 100 glorious acres of gardens and grounds\, including the world-famous Capability Brown-designed parkland. We are fortunate to have exclusive access to the walled gardens covering four acres with a profusion of colour\, fragrance and “vertical” gardening up the high brick walls. We will also have a private tour of the house and the grounds. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThe house as it stands today may be only a shadow of its previous incarnation – the so called Robert Adam “Big House” was demolished in 1955 – but the “Little House” that we will see today still offers treasures aplenty. Adam’s orangery houses an art gallery displaying a collection of old master paintings and drawings as well as more contemporary work. In the middle of the orangery\, somewhat incongruously\, stands the Chapel\, designed by CR Cockerell. At the other end of the Orangery\, large Adam doors (also rescued from the “Big House”) lead into a tapestry and sculpture gallery originally designed as a small zoo!  Lunch will be at the Stables restaurant on site. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nTickets are £70 each to include return private coach transport\, light refreshments on arrival\, a 2-course light lunch\, afternoon tea and private tours of the house and gardens. The coach will leave the Museum promptly at 9.30am\, returning at about 6.00pm. Please complete booking form no. 5 in the Friends Spring 2019 Newsletter. The trip is being organised by Mark Hake.
