Gloucester Cathedral is one of Britain’s finest buildings\, representing over 1\,300 years of faith and heritage. Our private tour covers the nave\, unchanged in over 900 years\, the Quire – a masterpiece of stone\, glass and wood\, the Cloister – famed for its beautiful fan-vaulting\, and the East Window\, installed in the 1350’s\, is among the largest windows of its kind. We will also see the ornate tomb of King Edward II. \nWe also visit Wallsworth Hall\, home to Nature In Art – a fabulous art collection inspired by the natural world. Set in a beautiful Georgian mansion dating from 1753\, the Hall is featured in Simon Jenkins’ book “England’s 1000 Best Houses”. SUMMARY:Charlton Down House & Tetbury Day Trip
DESCRIPTION:Please inform us of any dietary requirements by emailing us at friends@holburne.org upon purchasing your ticket. \n  \nCourtesy of the Holburne Museum’s Friends Committee\, we are offering a fantastic opportunity to explore the gardens of Charlton Down House and Tetbury. \nCharlton Down House is owned by Neil and Julie Record. Previously the focus of the estate was equestrian-based and no real interest was taken in the maintenance of the buildings and gardens. Neil and Julie purchased Charlton Down with the intention of it being used as a family home\, a weekend and holiday break away from their busy lives in London. They have invested substantially in restoring the buildings and gardens. \nThey have developed large herbaceous borders\, a topiary garden\, planted a copse\, and have turned the old horse school into a walled garden providing vegetables and flowers to the family. They have also introduced rescued animals to Charlton Down\, retired show horses\, donkeys\, ponies\, and even chickens. \nFrom Charlton Down House\, we have a short drive to Tetbury for lunch at The Close Hotel. Afterwards there is free time to explore Tetbury itself – perhaps a visit to the beautiful Georgian Gothic St Mary’s church or some of the fabulous independent shops in the town. \nTicket cost includes return private coach transport\, arrival refreshments and home made cakes at Charlton Down House as well as an introductory talk\, lunch and free time to explore Tetbury. Departing the Holburne at 9am\, returning about 4.30pm.

SUMMARY:SOLD OUT - Woodchester Park House garden & Kiftsgate Court Gardens
DESCRIPTION:Please inform us of any dietary requirements by emailing us at friends@holburne.org upon purchasing your ticket. \n  \nCourtesy of the Holburne Museum’s Friends Committee\, we are offering private tours of two spectacular gardens. \nWoodchester Park House is a large Victorian Gothic building which has existed in its present form since 1874. When the Bidwells arrived in 1995\, there was little or no garden. Several sheep and a couple of geese were grazing up to the windows of the house in around 3 acres of grass and tangles. In the subsequent near 30 years the Bidwells have transformed this area\, now wholly under cultivation. \nFor much of the summer there is a mass of colour: there are herbaceous beds surrounding the lawn and further beds on the walk round to the pond. There is a small orchard with wildflower meadow and another pond. Leading from the pond to the house is an avenue of yews. Adjoining the house there is a terrace with roses and colourful shrubs. Below the main lawn there is a vegetable garden and area for cutting flowers (including a number of rose beds). There is a woodland area with a range of shade loving plants and in late May a mass of alliums. \nFrom the Bidwells we go north to Kiftsgate Court gardens\, the work of three generations of women gardeners and garden designers: Heather Muir\, Diany Binny and Anne Chambers. It was Muir who\nbegan the transformation of the paved formal garden into something more fluid and naturalistic. From the 1950s\, Diany Binny’s influence began to be felt\, with sculptures commissioned\, a semi-circular pool installed in the lower garden and Kiftsgate opening to the public for the first time. Current owner Anne Chambers has continued with the idea of “evolution not revolution” when it comes to Kiftsgate’s development\, with one of her notable changes being the conversion of a tennis court area into the water garden. \nKiftsgate today is really a series of different garden-spaces\, with formal borders (including the famous Kiftsgate rose border) and plantings\, a wildflower meadow\, orchard\, a sunken garden\, terraces as well as water features and ponds. \nTicket cost includes return private coach transport\, arrival refreshments and a private tour of Woodchester Park House gardens\, entry to Kiftsgate\, and a delicious 2-course lunch at the Kiftsgate Tea Rooms. Depart from The Holburne at 9am\, aiming to be back in Bath by 6.30pm.

SUMMARY:SOLD OUT - Sudeley Castle Day Trip
DESCRIPTION:Please inform us of any dietary requirements by emailing us at friends@holburne.org upon purchasing your ticket. \n  \nCourtesy of the Holburne Museum’s Friends Committee\, we are offering a private walking tour of the amazing castle at Sudeley. \nSudeley’s origins date to a 10th century Saxon manor house\, in a region that was both agriculturally and ecclesiastically rich. Much later\, it was owned for a time and lived in by the dashing Thomas Seymour\, brother of Jane Seymour\, Henry VIIIs third wife. Sudeley went on to marry the widowed Katherine Parr\, Henry’s sixth and final wife\, which explains why Sudeley has the distinction of being the only privately-owned castle in the country with a Queen buried in its grounds. \nMuch of what the visitor sees today is an intriguing mix of Tudor and Victorian-Gothic\, the latter a result of the fact that like many other English houses\, Sudeley was rescued by “new money”\, in this instance the Dent brothers\, of glove fame (and more importantly fortune!)\, who acquired the castle in 1837. Sir Gilbert Scott was employed to re-build parts of the castle\, and interiors were “Gothicized”\, as was the fashion in the mid 19th century. Arguably the most handsome room is the Library\, with Elizabethan tapestry and an impressive fireplace. \nThe glorious gardens are a testament largely to Emma Dent\, wife of John Dent who inherited Sudeley from his unmarried bachelor uncles. There are actually 10 separate gardens in all\, including a Knot Garden\, The White Garden\, a Herb Garden\, and the centrepiece Queens Garden\, where more than 80 varieties of rose are planted. \nTicket cost includes private return coach transport\, arrival refreshments\, entry to the castle\, a light lunch and private walking tour of the gardens and castle exterior. Depart from The Holburne at 9am\, aiming to be back in Bath by 6.30pm.

SUMMARY:Day Trip to Cerney House & Gardens and Barnsley House - Sold Out
DESCRIPTION:This event has now sold out \n  \nPlease inform us of any dietary requirements by emailing us at friends@holburne.org.\nCourtesy of the Holburne Museum’s Friends Committee\, we are offering private guided tours of two superb gardens. \nIn the morning we will visit Cerney House Gardens\, near Cheltenham. Cerney House was built around 1660\, subsequently remodelled in the Georgian manner\, with further alterations in the 18th and 19th centuries. Current owners\, the Angus family\, acquired the property in 1983. The heart of the garden is its Victorian walled garden with greenhouse and bothy\, and was once described by Country Living magazine as “what most people spire to in their gardens and few achieve”. Herbaceous borders are packed with old-fashioned varieties and surrounded by roses and climbing plants. There is also a kitchen garden\, wild flower bank and woodlands. \nBarnsley House was once the home of famous garden designer and writer\, Rosemary Verey\, and she created what remains to this day a classic example of an ‘English country garden’\, with its famous Laburnum Walk (which should be at its prime at the time of our visit) and several knot gardens. There are also extensive kitchen gardens (inspired by those at Chateau Villandry in the Loire Valley) which supply the hotel now occupying the main house. We will be shown around the gardens by head gardener\, Jennifer Danbury. \nTicket cost includes return private coach transport\, entry and private guided tour of both gardens\, arrival refreshments at Cerney House and an excellent two-course lunch at The Boot pub adjoining Barnsley House. Depart from the Holburne Museum at 9am\, returning at 5.30pm.

SUMMARY:Day Trip to Owlpen Manor & Chavenage - Sold Out
DESCRIPTION:This event has now sold out \nPlease inform us of any dietary requirements by emailing us at friends@holburne.org. \nCourtesy of the Holburne Museum’s Friends Committee\, we are offering a fantastic opportunity to visit two outstanding examples of Cotswold medieval manor houses. \nWe will spend the morning at Owlpen\, which dates back to 1450 but was carefully repaired and renovated in Arts & Crafts style in 1926 when the house was rescued after nearly a century of dereliction. The interiors include a magnificent Tudor Great Hall of 1523\, an elegant early Georgian parlour and a Great Chamber with unique painted cloth wall-hangings. The gardens range from a charming hillside terraced area with yeo topiary\, old roses and box parterres\, and a walled kitchen garden to an ‘Old English’ garden much admired by Gertrude Jekyll. \nChavenage\, or to legions of Poldark fans ‘Trenwith’ from the TV series\, has its origins in the early 14th Century\, as sections of the current building formed part of an Augustinian monastic community. After the dissolution of the monasteries\, the estate was granted to Thomas Seymour who subsequently married Katherine Parr. The House and estate passed through several owners over subsequent centuries before being acquired by the Lowsley-Williams in 1891. Inside the house itself\, we shall see the Great Hall\, a fine minstrels’ gallery and fireplace\, the impressive Oak Room with fluted panelling and\, on the first floor\, two richly decorated bedrooms. \nTicket cost includes return private coach transport\, entry and private guided tour of both properties\, arrival refreshments at Owlpen and a delicious two-course lunch at Chavenage. Depart from the Holburne Museum at 9am\, returning at 5.30pm.

SUMMARY:An Enlightened Heart
DESCRIPTION:Galliarda’s An Enlightened Heart project highlights the music and performing traditions of women in\nthe eighteenth-century.\nWith the inclusion of new pieces for early instruments commissioned by group members from young female composers (Jenni Pinnock and Rebecca Rowe) connect with the developing tradition of female composers today.\nWe aim to raise awareness of the music\, and the difficult position women had as independent composers\, multi-instrumentalists and singers in the age of the enlightenment. \nThe quartet features the young recorder player Kate Allsop who recently completed her graduate studies at the Birmingham Conservatoire gaining a first and winning the course prize. Kate is joined by the seasoned performers Sara Stowe (harpsichordist and singer)\, Ibi Azziz (viol) and Matthew Spring (lutes and viols).

SUMMARY:Mozart Recital - SOLD OUT
DESCRIPTION:The Schantz fortepiano\, acquired in 1983\, is one of the highlights of the Holburne’s collection. It was made in Vienna around 1795\, and is exceptionally rare\, only four such instruments have survived.\n\nWe have invited the internationally respected keyboard artist Nathaniel Mander\, to play the Schantz for us this summer – he has chosen to play some of Mozart’s most appealing and enchanting sonatas and variations. This is a rare opportunity to hear the fortepiano come to life\, with an exceptionally talented musician.\n\nTickets are £20 each Thursday 18 August 2022\, doors open at 7pm\, the concert will begin at 7.30pm

SUMMARY:Supporters Trip to Painswick & Miserden Gardens
DESCRIPTION:A day trip to see these two very fine Gloucestershire Gardens. Almost a century separates Painswick — the country’s only surviving complete Rococo garden — from Miserden\, a classically designed series of garden rooms and spaces. Miserden’s highlights include a Lutyens designed topiary yew walk and a mulberry tree planted in 1620. \nTickets\, only available in advance\, include return private coach transport from the Holburne\, light refreshments and lunch\, a private talk and tour at Painswick and private access at Miserden. To reserve your place please use BOOKING FORM 5 in the Supporters Spring 2022 Newsletter\, which has more information on the properties and guidance on Access. \n
