The journey from Bath to Baghdad proved to be just the start of Miss Tanner’s adventures across Persia. Over the course of her three trips to the Middle East, she visited areas of Syria, Iran, Iraq – some of the countries which formed the Persian Empire.

On her return to the UK, Miss Tanner wrote By Road & River, Journal of Journeys in Persia & Mesopotamia. As well as detailing the route of her journey, this journal provides a real insight into her experience – from the places she stayed, the people she met and the things she saw, her diary is evocative and immersive.

Miss Tanner’s collection forms a fascinating story in itself. But it is important to recognise what a truly epic and intrepid journey she undertook as a solo female traveler in the Victorian era. We’ve created this map to highlight the breadth of her travels, and you can follow her journey by reading excerpts of her journal.

One of the most exciting aspects of delivering Bath to Baghdad with the support of The Big Give campaign has been completing essential conservation work on the objects from Miss Tanner’s collection. This has been a varied process which has ranged from light cleaning to major repair work, all of which has contributed to transforming Miss Tanner’s collection at The Holburne Museum.
