Stanley Spencer: Sandham Memorial Chapel and The Spencer Gallery in Cookham
- This event has passed.
Stanley Spencer’s fervent, if somewhat unconventional Christian faith, was frequently reflected in his work, and was regarded as controversial when it was first exhibited- This was especially true of his paintings set in Cookham, where Spencer lived much of his adult life. The Spencer Gallery provides a unique insight into the man, the artist and his work. We first visit Spencer’s paintings at Sandham Memorial Chapel – a colossal undertaking, which. was modelled on Giotto’s Arena Chapel in Padua. Seventeen huge canvases depict Spencer’s experiences during World War I, commissioned by Mary and John Behrend, to commemorate Mary’s brother who was killed in the conflict.
*Price £85 to include return private coach transport, private access and tour of the Sandham Memorial Chapel, lunch and private talk and tour of the Spencer Gallery
