Tom de Freston is a renowned artist who creates multimedia worlds, combining paintings, film and performance into immersive creations that tell a story. In this painting workshop Tom will work with you to create a piece of artwork based on his illustrations from Julia and the Shark, the stunningly beautiful children’s book written by his author wife Kiran Millwood Hargrave.  A captivating and luminous story about a mother, a daughter, and the great Greenland shark, the story has timely themes of the importance of science and the environment.

You can drop children who are 8 or older at these events, so only need to buy a ticket for each child attending. We ask parents/carers to children off at the venue, sign them in, and leave a mobile contact number in case of emergencies. If adults need to stay with their child, they can attend for free.

Tom de Freston is an artist and writer, and is currently the artistic director of Medicine Unboxed. His work is exhibited widely, and he has held various prestigious residencies and fellowships, including the inaugural Creative Fellowship at Birmingham University, the Levy Plumb Artist in Residence at Cambridge University, and a Leverhulme Artistic Residency. Previous publications include graphic novels with Bloomsbury and Gatehouse Press. Tom lives in Oxford with his wife, novelist Kiran Millwood Hargrave, and their cat.
