Hugh Belsey on Gainsborough

Gainsborough painted portraits at all periods of his career and they provided the majority of his income. Some were initiated by the artist and in the 1780s, when he was expending much of his energy on so-called ‘Fancy’ pictures, the lengthy process of painting a couple of important portraits raises further questions about their classification, their intention and their purpose. This lecture examines this dichotomy and shows how very inventive Gainsborough’s work was during the last decade of his life.

Our weekly workshops, led by Chrissie Weltike, are held in the cosy environment of the Gardener’s Lodge.

They help parents and pre-school children to play and learn together through songs, stories, and creative activities inspired by the Museum’s collection, exhibitions and location. Due to room capacity, we request that parents make alternative arrangements for additional siblings over the age of one. . Celebrate the changing seasons with songs, sensory exploration and creative activities. Sessions designed for both adults and children to enjoy.
