Day trip to Tewkesbury Abbey and Hereford Cathedral
- This event has passed.
Founded in 1087, Tewkesbury Abbey dominates the surrounding floodplains. Its 45m tall bell tower is the largest such Norman structure standing. Tewkesbury is famous too for its medieval and Victorian stained glass. More recently Tom Denny designed two stained glass windows to commemorate the 900th anniversary of the Abbey’s foundation. Hereford Cathedral is home to the Mappa Mundi, the largest medieval map remaining in the world, dating to about 1300. The map is laid out with Jerusalem at the centre, with east at the top and the Garden of Eden shown on one side. The Cathedral’s Chained Library is a unique treasure with 229 medieval manuscripts, the oldest being the 8th century Hereford Gospels, as old as the cathedral itself.
*Price £75 to include return private coach transport, a private tour of Tewkesbury Abbey, light buffet lunch at Hereford Cathedral and private tours of the Cathedral, the Chained Library and the Mappa Mundi exhibition.
