Winchester October 2012

Our visit to Winchester was organised by Simon and Olivia Eliot. Simon Eliot, for 24 years a master at the College, gave a masterful introduction to the city’s history as we drove there.

At the College we toured the fine buildings dating back to the 14th century, and were initiated into the Fellows’ Library by Geoffrey Day, Librarian. This extraordinary collection of books and manuscripts has been accumulated over six and a bit centuries largely through gifts, since its beginning thanks to the College’s founder Bishop William (‘of Wykeham’). Most Friends visited the Cathedral, and last we went to the 12th-century Hospital of St Cross; the Norman church at the heart of the complex is large and very fine.
